Machine Block
Machine Block is the core crafting component of IndustrialCraft 2, built from 8 Refined Iron ingots and used to assemble nearly every IC2 machine.
Description
Machine Block is not a functional device on its own; the block has no GUI, no power input, and no processing logic until it is consumed as an ingredient in a larger machine recipe. Players stockpile Machine Blocks in batches during the iron-age phase of an IC2 playthrough, because each advanced machine tier (Basic to Advanced) demands one or more casings alongside electronic circuits and machine upgrades. A standard mid-game factory running a Macerator, Compressor, Extractor, and two Furnaces needs roughly five to six Machine Blocks just for the first machine tier, and the count grows with every upgrade. Keep a dedicated chest for spare Machine Blocks next to the metalworking line — running out mid-craft is the single most common bottleneck when scaling an IC2 ore-processing chain.
IndustrialCraft 2 Guide
How to craft a Machine Block in IndustrialCraft 2
-
1
Smelt Refined Iron
Place a vanilla Iron Ingot in any furnace to produce one Refined Iron ingot — the base metal for every IC2 machine component.
-
2
Gather 8 Refined Iron ingots
Crafting one Machine Block consumes exactly 8 Refined Iron ingots, so smelt at least 8 iron ingots (8 vanilla iron ingots become 8 Refined Iron).
-
3
Fill the outer ring of the 3x3 grid
Open a Crafting Table and place the 8 Refined Iron ingots in every slot of the 3x3 grid except the center — the hollow-ring pattern is the Machine Block signature.
-
4
Collect the Machine Block
Take the Machine Block from the result slot; one craft yields one Machine Block, which is ready to use as the casing for an IC2 Macerator, Compressor, or Extractor.
Machine Block has no GUI and does nothing on its own — it is a crafting component consumed inside the recipe of a larger IC2 machine.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Machine Block used for in IndustrialCraft 2?
Machine Block is the structural casing at the center of almost every IC2 machine recipe, including the Macerator, Compressor, Extractor, and Iron Furnace.
How do you craft a Machine Block in IC2?
Place 8 Refined Iron ingots in the outer ring of a 3x3 crafting grid, leaving the center slot empty. One craft yields one Machine Block.
Does a Machine Block process items or use power?
No. Machine Block is a crafting component only — it has no GUI, no power input, and no processing function until consumed inside a larger machine recipe.
Is the Machine Block renewable?
Yes. Refined Iron is smelted from vanilla Iron Ingots, and iron is renewable through Iron Golem farms or villager trading, so the Machine Block is renewable.
How much iron does one Machine Block cost?
One Machine Block costs 8 Refined Iron ingots, which equals 8 vanilla Iron Ingots smelted in a furnace, plus the smelting step that turns them into Refined Iron.
