Description

The Thermal Centrifuge is the third machine in IndustrialCraft 2's ore processing chain: the Macerator crushes raw ore, the Ore Washing Plant purifies the crushed ore, and the Thermal Centrifuge separates each purified crushed ore into a primary dust plus a bonus tiny pile of a second dust. The Thermal Centrifuge accepts up to 128 EU/t from a medium-voltage network, draws 48 EU/t while running, and finishes one item every 25 seconds for a total of 24000 EU per operation — the internal buffer of 48000 EU covers two complete operations. Before the first output appears, the Thermal Centrifuge must heat up to the working temperature required by the loaded recipe; the heat-up phase consumes extra energy, and all stored heat is lost as soon as the input slots run dry.

Two jobs push the Thermal Centrifuge into the nuclear tier of IndustrialCraft 2. Uranium enrichment: crushed uranium ore comes out as Uranium 238 plus a tiny pile of Uranium 235, the two isotopes Nuclear Reactor fuel is built from, and purified crushed uranium ore doubles the Uranium 235 yield. Depleted fuel rod recycling: spent uranium and MOX fuel rods — single, dual and quad — return as Plutonium, Uranium 238 and Iron Dust instead of dead waste. Away from the reactor, the Thermal Centrifuge grinds Cobblestone into Stone Dust, Slag into Coal Dust with a tiny pile of Gold Dust, Clay Dust into Silicon Dioxide, and Nether Quartz into tiny piles of Lithium Dust. Craft the Thermal Centrifuge from an Advanced Machine, Coils, an Electric Motor, a Mining Laser and iron ingots, then keep the input queue full — every cold start pays the heat-up cost again.

Guide

How to use the Thermal Centrifuge in IndustrialCraft 2

  1. 1

    Craft the machine

Assemble the Thermal Centrifuge on a crafting table from an Advanced Machine, Coils, an Electric Motor, a Mining Laser and iron ingots — the exact grid for each IC2 version is listed in the recipes on this page.

  2. 2

    Connect medium-voltage power

Wire the Thermal Centrifuge to a medium-voltage source: the machine accepts a maximum of 128 EU/t and draws 48 EU/t while processing.

  3. 3

    Feed the ore processing chain

Crush raw ore in the Macerator, wash the crushed ore in the Ore Washing Plant, then load the purified crushed ore into the Thermal Centrifuge — purified input earns the best byproduct yield.

  4. 4

    Wait out the preheat phase

The Thermal Centrifuge heats to the working temperature of the loaded recipe before the first output appears. Preheating consumes energy on top of the 24000 EU per item, so the first cycle always costs more.

  5. 5

    Recycle depleted fuel rods

Load spent uranium and MOX fuel rods into the Thermal Centrifuge to recover Plutonium, Uranium 238 and Iron Dust — fresh material for the next round of Nuclear Reactor fuel.

Keep the input queue full

The Thermal Centrifuge loses almost all stored heat the moment the input empties. Batching ores into a continuous stream is cheaper than stop-and-go operation, because every cold start repeats the heat-up energy cost.

Frequently asked questions

How much energy does the Thermal Centrifuge use?

The Thermal Centrifuge draws 48 EU/t and completes one item every 25 seconds, for a total of 24000 EU per operation. The internal buffer of 48000 EU holds two full operations, and preheating from cold costs extra energy on top.

Why does the Thermal Centrifuge stand still before working?

The Thermal Centrifuge must reach the working temperature set by the loaded recipe before centrifuging starts. The heat-up phase draws energy without producing output, and the machine drops its heat again as soon as the input queue empties — so the first item after every idle period is the most expensive.

What does the Thermal Centrifuge do with uranium?

The Thermal Centrifuge turns crushed uranium ore into Uranium 238 plus a tiny pile of Uranium 235, and purified crushed uranium ore into Uranium 238 plus two tiny piles of Uranium 235 — the isotopes IndustrialCraft 2's Nuclear Reactor fuel is built from.

Can the Thermal Centrifuge recycle depleted fuel rods?

Yes. Depleted uranium and MOX fuel rods — single, dual and quad — centrifuge into Plutonium, Uranium 238 and Iron Dust, turning spent Nuclear Reactor fuel back into usable nuclear material.

Which non-ore jobs does the Thermal Centrifuge handle?

The Thermal Centrifuge grinds Cobblestone into Stone Dust, Slag into Coal Dust with a tiny pile of Gold Dust, Clay Dust into Silicon Dioxide, and Nether Quartz into tiny piles of Lithium Dust.

What byproducts do metal ores give in the Thermal Centrifuge?

Beyond the main dust, iron ore leaves a tiny pile of Gold Dust, gold ore a tiny pile of Silver Dust, tin ore a tiny pile of Iron Dust, and purified silver ore a tiny pile of Lead Dust — extra metal on top of the primary output.
