Mining Laser
Mining Laser is the high-voltage electric tool of Industrial Craft 2, boring tunnels and mining ore through eight switchable beam modes on a 300,000 EU charge.
Description
Mining Laser doubles as a weapon: the Long-Range beam deals 10 hearts of damage per shot, Explosive mode detonates the impact point for up to 168 hearts, and Scatter sweeps a 5x5 wall of 25 beams. Charging works only in an MFE or an MFSU — the dedicated energy storage units of Industrial Craft 2 — or instantly from a worn Energypack the moment the mode is switched or a shot is fired. A practical routine: Low-Focus for everyday digging at 2,000 shots per charge, Super-Heat for ore veins because smelted drops skip the furnace step, Long-Range for distant targets. Super-Heat also turns sand into glass and cobblestone into smooth stone without dropping an item, and clay drops four bricks at once. Build Mining Laser once Energy Crystal production is running, keep Explosive mode away from finished bases, and try the Like a Boss achievement, which rewards killing the Ender Dragon with the Mining Laser.

Guide
Mining Laser: how to craft, charge and switch modes
-
1
Craft the tool
Mining Laser is assembled on the crafting grid from two Redstone Dust, four Alloy, one Energy Crystal and one Advanced Circuit. The result is a Tier 3 tool, so plan an MFE-level power grid before crafting.
-
2
Charge in MFE or MFSU
Mining Laser charges only in an MFE or an MFSU — lower-tier storage units cannot charge the tool at all. Place the tool in the storage unit and wait for the 300,000 EU capacity to fill.
-
3
Switch the firing mode
Hold the mode-switch key (M by default) and right-click to cycle Mining Laser through eight modes: Mining, Low-Focus, Long-Range, Scatter, Explosive, Horizontal, Super-Heat and 3x3.
-
4
Pick a mode for the job
Low-Focus costs 100 EU per shot and out-mines a Diamond Drill at half the energy cost; Super-Heat drops smelted items from ore; Long-Range punches through 27 blocks of stone for 5,000 EU.
-
5
Stay safe with explosive beams
The Explosive mode detonates on impact and gouges a crater, so point Mining Laser away from bases and storage rooms: the blast destroys the very blocks a builder wanted to keep.
A charged Energypack worn as chest armor refills Mining Laser to full the moment the mode is switched or a shot is fired, as long as the pack holds enough energy — no MFE stop needed.

Frequently asked questions
How do I charge a Mining Laser?
Mining Laser charges only in an MFE or an MFSU, because the tool draws high-voltage power. Wearing a charged Energypack also refills the internal 300,000 EU storage instantly when the mode is switched or a shot is fired.
Which Mining Laser mode mines cheapest?
Low-Focus is the economy mode: 100 EU per shot, 2,000 shots per full charge, and Mining Laser in Low-Focus mines faster than a Diamond Drill at half the energy cost.
Can Mining Laser smelt ore without a furnace?
Yes — Super-Heat mode drops the smelted product: iron ore drops an iron ingot, clay drops four bricks, while sand turns into glass in place instead of dropping an item.
Is Mining Laser a good weapon?
Mining Laser works as a ranged weapon: Long-Range deals 10 hearts per beam and Explosive hits for up to 168 hearts at the center of the blast, but each heavy shot costs 5,000 EU of the 300,000 EU storage.
Do blocks destroyed by Mining Laser always drop?
Most blocks destroyed by the beam drop as if mined normally, but glass and leaves drop nothing, machines of the mod drop as a Machine Block, and a small share of blocks is destroyed without any drop.
