Why is the ratio 1:8?

Mojang designed the Nether as a fast-travel dimension. One block of horizontal travel in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld, making it ideal for long-distance routes via Nether highways.

No. Y is preserved when you teleport between dimensions. Only X and Z are scaled by the 1:8 ratio.

A mislink occurs when a new portal accidentally connects to an existing portal nearby instead of forming a fresh link. This happens when two portals are within 16 blocks of each other in the Nether.

How do I fix a portal mislink?

Break and rebuild one of the portals at coordinates at least 16 blocks away from the other in the Nether. You can also wait 60 seconds — portals forget their links over time.
