Why is the ratio 1:8?

Mojang designed the Nether as a fast-travel dimension. One block of horizontal travel in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld, making it ideal for long-distance routes via Nether highways.

Does the Y coordinate change?

No. Y is preserved when you teleport between dimensions. Only X and Z are scaled by the 1:8 ratio.

What is a portal mislink?

A mislink occurs when a new portal accidentally connects to an existing portal nearby instead of forming a fresh link. This happens when two portals are within 16 blocks of each other in the Nether.

How do I fix a portal mislink?

Break and rebuild one of the portals at coordinates at least 16 blocks away from the other in the Nether. You can also wait 60 seconds — portals forget their links over time.

What is the build height in the Nether?

In Java Edition the build limit is 256, with a bedrock ceiling at Y=123–127. In Bedrock Edition the limit is 128.

Is the calculation rounded?

Minecraft uses floor division for portal coordinate matching. Our calculator shows both the exact value and the integer the game actually uses for portal placement.
