Description

String is a renewable crafting item in Minecraft, dropped by spiders and cave spiders (0-2 per kill, up to 5 with Looting III) and obtained by breaking cobwebs with a sword or shears. String also comes from fishing, bartering with piglins, cat gifts, and chests in dungeons, temples, and woodland mansions. Because spiders spawn endlessly in the dark, String is fully renewable and one of the easiest early-game materials to stockpile.

String is the backbone of many tools and decorative blocks: it crafts a Bow (3 string + 3 sticks), a Crossbow, a Fishing Rod, a Lead, and a Loom (2 string + 2 planks). Four String arranged in a square make one block of white Wool, and one String with a Honeycomb makes a Candle. Placing String on the ground creates a Tripwire that links Tripwire Hooks into redstone-triggered traps and hidden door circuits. For builders and redstone engineers, String is the cheap, abundant glue that connects combat gear, automation, and trap design.

Survival Guide

How to get String in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Hunt spiders at night

Find spiders or cave spiders that spawn in darkness and defeat them. Each spider drops 0-2 String, and the Looting III enchantment raises the maximum to 5.

  2. 2

    Harvest cobwebs

Break cobwebs in mineshafts with a sword or shears to collect String. Shears and swords are the only tools that return String instead of destroying the web.

  3. 3

    Fish and trade

Cast a fishing rod for a chance at String as junk loot, or barter gold ingots with piglins in the Nether for a possible String reward.

  4. 4

    Loot generated chests

Open chests in dungeons, jungle temples, and woodland mansions, where String appears as common loot.

Renewable supply

String is fully renewable because spiders keep spawning in dark areas. Build a mob spawner farm or a dark mob-grinder to automate unlimited String collection.

Frequently asked questions

Can you craft String in Minecraft?

No, String has no crafting recipe. You obtain it from spider drops, cobwebs broken with a sword or shears, fishing, piglin bartering, and generated chests.

What can you make with String?

String crafts a Bow, Crossbow, Fishing Rod, Lead, Loom, and Candle. Four String also make one block of white Wool.

Is String renewable?

Yes. Spiders spawn endlessly in dark areas, so String is fully renewable and can be farmed with a mob spawner trap.

How do you collect cobwebs as String?

Break a cobweb with a sword or shears and it drops one String. Any other tool destroys the cobweb without a drop.

Does String work in both Java and Bedrock Edition?

Yes. String behaves the same in Java and Bedrock Edition for drops, crafting, and tripwire placement.
