Description

Leather is dropped by cows, mooshrooms, horses, donkeys, mules, and llamas when they die, with each mob yielding 0–2 leather and more under the Looting enchantment. Leather can also be crafted from four rabbit hide on a crafting table, pulled from chests in many structures, reeled in as a junk catch while fishing, and received as a gift from a tamed cat after the player sleeps. Hoglins in the Nether drop leather too, making Leather a fully renewable resource across every dimension in Minecraft.

Leather is the only material for the four leather armor pieces — cap (5 leather), tunic (8), leggings (7), and boots (4) — and leather armor is the single armor set that accepts dye for custom colors. Beyond armor, Leather crafts books (3 paper + 1 leather) that feed bookshelves and enchanting setups, and item frames (8 sticks + 1 leather) for decorating walls and storage rooms. Leatherworker villagers also buy Leather for emeralds, so a cow farm doubles as an early-game trading income.

Minecraft Survival Guide

How to get and use Leather in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Farm leather from animals

Breed and harvest cows, horses, donkeys, mules, or llamas; each kill drops 0–2 leather, and a sword enchanted with Looting III raises the maximum to 5.

  2. 2

    Convert rabbit hide

Place four rabbit hide in any 2x2 grid to craft one leather when animal sources are scarce.

  3. 3

    Craft leather armor

Use 5 leather for a cap, 8 for a tunic, 7 for leggings, and 4 for boots, then dye the pieces in a cauldron or crafting grid for custom colors.

  4. 4

    Make books and item frames

Combine 3 paper with 1 leather for a book, or 8 sticks with 1 leather for an item frame to decorate and label storage.

  5. 5

    Trade with a leatherworker

Sell surplus leather to a leatherworker villager for emeralds to fund early-game upgrades.

Renewable resource

Leather is fully renewable: cows and other livestock breed with wheat, and rabbit hide farms or hoglin farms in the Nether provide steady backup supplies.

Frequently asked questions

What drops leather in Minecraft?

Cows, mooshrooms, horses, donkeys, mules, and llamas drop 0–2 leather on death, and hoglins drop leather in the Nether. Looting raises the maximum drop.

Can you craft leather?

Yes. Four rabbit hide placed in the crafting grid produce one leather, which is useful when livestock is scarce.

What is leather used for?

Leather crafts the four leather armor pieces, books, and item frames, and leatherworker villagers buy it for emeralds.

Is leather armor dyeable?

Leather armor is the only armor set in Minecraft that can be dyed, using a cauldron of dyed water or by combining the piece with dye in the crafting grid.

How much leather does a book need?

A book needs 1 leather plus 3 paper, and three books with six wooden planks craft a bookshelf for enchanting.
