Description

Leather Horse Armor is the weakest horse armor in Minecraft, granting +3 armor points to a horse it is equipped on. Unlike iron, gold, and diamond horse armor, leather horse armor is craftable: arrange 7 leather in a U-shaped pattern on the crafting table to make one piece. It is also the only horse armor that can be dyed — in Java Edition you craft it together with a dye, and in Bedrock Edition you dip it in a cauldron filled with dyed water. Java Edition added it in version 1.14 (snapshot 19w08a); Bedrock Edition has had it since Pocket Edition 0.15. Leather horse armor never generates in structure chests, so players obtain it only by crafting or by trading 6 emeralds with an Expert-level Leatherworker villager. To equip it, open the horse's inventory while riding and place the armor in the dedicated armor slot. Both adult horses and zombie horses can wear it, but donkeys, mules, llamas, and skeleton horses cannot. Because the protection is low, most players treat leather horse armor as a cosmetic, color-customizable option rather than serious combat gear.

How to craft and use Leather Horse Armor in Minecraft

    Gather 7 leather

    Kill cows, horses, or mooshrooms for leather, or craft it from 4 rabbit hide. You need 7 leather for one armor piece.

    Craft the armor

    On a crafting table, place leather in a U shape: top-left and top-right, all three middle cells, and bottom-left and bottom-right. This yields one leather horse armor.

    Dye it (optional)

    In Java Edition, craft the armor with any dye to recolor it. In Bedrock Edition, fill a cauldron with water, add dye, and dip the armor in it.

    Equip it on a horse

    Tame and mount an adult horse, open its inventory, and place the armor in the horse armor slot to gain +3 armor.

Important

Leather horse armor does not spawn in chests. You can only craft it or buy it for 6 emeralds from an Expert-level Leatherworker villager.
