Description

Saddle is a non-craftable utility item in Minecraft used to ride and control rideable mobs. Saddle cannot be made on a crafting table — instead, Saddle appears in chest loot across dungeons, desert and jungle temples, Nether fortresses, bastion remnants, End cities, and ruined portals. Players also pull Saddle from the water as a treasure catch while fishing, or buy Saddle for 6 emeralds from a Master-level Leatherworker villager in Java Edition.

Saddle equips onto horses, donkeys, mules, and camels through their inventory screen after taming, letting you mount and ride them directly. For pigs and striders, Saddle alone is not enough: a pig needs a Carrot on a Stick to steer, and a strider needs a Warped Fungus on a Stick to cross the lava lakes of the Nether. Each Saddle stacks to only one per slot, so a full stable of mounts means collecting many separate Saddles.

Java & Bedrock Guide

How to use a Saddle in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Obtain a Saddle

Find a Saddle in dungeon, temple, Nether fortress, or bastion chests, fish one up as treasure, or trade 6 emeralds with a Master-level Leatherworker villager.

  2. 2

    Tame your mount

Tame a horse, donkey, or mule by mounting it repeatedly until hearts appear; camels and pigs do not need taming.

  3. 3

    Open the mount inventory

Mount a tamed horse and press the inventory key, then place the Saddle into the dedicated saddle slot.

  4. 4

    Steer pigs and striders

On a pig or strider, equip the Saddle, then hold a Carrot on a Stick (pig) or a Warped Fungus on a Stick (strider) to control its direction.

Important

Saddle cannot be crafted in survival Minecraft. The only ways to get one are chest loot, fishing, villager trading, or (in Bedrock Edition) wandering traders and raid drops.

Frequently asked questions

Can you craft a Saddle in Minecraft?

No. Saddle has no crafting recipe in survival — you obtain it from chest loot, fishing, or by trading 6 emeralds with a Master-level Leatherworker villager.

What animals can wear a Saddle?

Saddle works on horses, donkeys, mules, camels, pigs, and striders. Skeleton horses and zombie horses can also be saddled.

Do you need a Saddle to ride a pig?

Yes. A pig needs a Saddle to be ridden and a Carrot on a Stick to be steered; without the Saddle you cannot mount the pig.

Where do you find Saddles fastest?

Fishing and Nether fortress or bastion chests are reliable sources, while a Master-level Leatherworker villager sells a guaranteed Saddle for 6 emeralds.

Does a Saddle stack in Minecraft?

No. Saddle has a maximum stack size of one, so each inventory slot holds a single Saddle.
