Description

Leather Boots are the earliest craftable armor for the feet in Minecraft, made from four leather arranged in two vertical pairs on the crafting grid. Each pair of Leather Boots provides 1 armor point (half a shield icon) and 65 points of durability, the lowest of any boot tier but available the moment players gather leather from cows, horses, or llamas. Leather Boots can also be found in dungeon, mineshaft, and village chests.

Leather Boots are the only leather armor piece players dye for color, either by combining the boots with dye on the crafting grid in Java Edition or by dipping them in a dyed cauldron in both editions. Enchant Leather Boots with Feather Falling to cut fall damage, Depth Strider for faster swimming, or Frost Walker to freeze water underfoot. Because leather is fully renewable through cow breeding, Leather Boots are the cheapest footwear to repair, making them a practical starter choice before iron or diamond boots.

Java Edition Guide

How to craft and use Leather Boots in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Gather leather

Kill cows, horses, donkeys, mules, or llamas to collect leather, or trade with a Leatherworker villager. You need four leather for one pair of Leather Boots.

  2. 2

    Craft the boots

Open a crafting table and place leather in two vertical columns: the left and right cells of the top and middle rows. This boots pattern yields one pair of Leather Boots.

  3. 3

    Dye them (optional)

Combine the Leather Boots with any dye on the crafting grid in Java Edition, or dip them in a cauldron of dyed water in Bedrock Edition, to change their color.

  4. 4

    Equip and enchant

Place Leather Boots in the feet armor slot, then use an enchanting table or anvil to add Feather Falling, Depth Strider, or Unbreaking.

Version difference

In Java Edition you dye Leather Boots directly in the crafting grid; in Bedrock Edition dyeing requires a water-filled cauldron with dye added.
