Description

Stick is the most-crafted handle item in Minecraft, made by placing two wooden planks vertically in the crafting grid to yield four sticks. Stick can also be crafted from two bamboo, which makes Stick fully renewable through both tree farms and bamboo farms. Stick additionally drops when leaves decay (about a 2% chance) and from breaking dead bushes, so even a treeless desert start can supply Stick.

Stick is required for nearly every tool and weapon: pickaxes, axes, shovels, hoes, and swords all use Stick as the handle, while torches, soul torches, redstone torches, ladders, fences, fence gates, signs, item frames, bows, fishing rods, and arrows also consume Stick. Stick even works as a weak furnace fuel, smelting half an item per Stick. Because Stick sits at the root of the entire tool tree, keeping a full stack of Stick in storage is one of the simplest survival habits in Minecraft.

How to craft a Stick in Minecraft

    Gather wooden planks

    Chop any tree and craft the logs into planks; a single plank type works, and different wood types can even be mixed.

    Place two planks vertically

    In the crafting grid, stack two planks in the same column, one above the other, to form the Stick recipe.

    Collect four sticks

    Each two-plank craft outputs four sticks, so the planks from one log yield eight sticks in total.

    Use bamboo as an alternative

    In jungle or bamboo biomes, place two bamboo in a single column to craft one stick without cutting down trees.

Renewable tip

Both bamboo and trees regrow, so a small bamboo or tree farm gives an endless supply of Stick for tools and torches.
