Bamboo
Bamboo is the fast-growing single-stem jungle plant that grows up to 16 blocks tall — feeds pandas, crafts scaffolding and sticks, and is a renewable building material (farm it endlessly).
Description
The item has multiple roles. As food, it is the main food of pandas; players feeding pandas or breeding them in enclosures must maintain a steady supply. As crafting input, two stalks craft into one stick (saving wood for inventories where wood is precious), and six stalks plus one string craft into six scaffolding blocks — climbable blocks that stack upward while supported. The plant also smelts as fuel (one item per quarter-item-smelted, the weakest fuel in the game). The 1.20 update added a full bamboo wood family — matching block, planks, doors — using stalks as the input material.

How to farm and use Bamboo in Minecraft
-
1
Find your first bamboo
Gather bamboo from jungle and bamboo jungle biomes, or loot it from shipwreck and jungle temple chests; pandas also drop bamboo when killed.
-
2
Plant it on a valid block
Place a bamboo stalk on dirt, grass, sand, red sand, gravel, mud, moss, or podzol — bamboo accepts the widest range of soils of any plant in Minecraft.
-
3
Speed up growth with bone meal
Right-click the stalk with bone meal to add 1-2 segments instantly; a stalk grows up to 16 blocks tall on its own over time.
-
4
Build an auto-harvest farm
Place an observer facing the top growth block wired to a piston; the piston breaks the stalk when it grows, dropping bamboo onto a hopper line.
-
5
Craft with the bamboo
Turn bamboo into scaffolding (6 bamboo + 1 string makes 6), sticks (2 bamboo), or a full bamboo wood set added in 1.20 by crafting bamboo into a bamboo block.
Any sword breaks bamboo stalks and shoots instantly, even through Mining Fatigue — the fastest way to harvest a whole plantation by hand, at the cost of two durability points per block.

Frequently asked questions
Can you craft Bamboo?
No, bamboo cannot be crafted. It is a renewable plant gathered from jungle biomes, looted from shipwreck and jungle temple chests, or dropped by pandas.
How tall does Bamboo grow in Minecraft?
A single bamboo stalk grows up to 16 blocks tall — the tallest single-stem plant in vanilla Minecraft. Bone meal speeds it up by 1-2 segments per use.
What can you make with Bamboo?
Bamboo crafts into scaffolding (6 bamboo + 1 string make 6), sticks (2 bamboo), and the full bamboo wood set added in 1.20, including bamboo planks, blocks, and bamboo mosaic.
What do pandas eat in Minecraft?
Pandas mainly eat bamboo, and cake is their only other food. Breeding requires bamboo growing nearby: in Java Edition, at least one grown bamboo stalk within a 7×7×3 area; in Bedrock Edition, eight bamboo plants within a five-block radius of each panda. Pandas cannot be tamed.
Is Bamboo renewable?
Yes, bamboo is renewable. A planted stalk regrows indefinitely on its own, making it an unlimited source of building material and furnace fuel.
