Black Carpet is a thin wool cover (1/16 block tall) that stops mob spawning (mobs cannot appear on top) and hides floor light sources.
Description
Builders value Black Carpet for a mix no other floor block offers: the texture looks opaque, yet light passes through undimmed, so a light-emitting block hidden underneath still brightens the room. A fence topped with Black Carpet lets the player jump up while mobs keep treating the fence as a wall. A hopper beneath Black Carpet still collects items lying on top. Since Java Edition 1.19, placing or walking on Black Carpet sends no vibration to a sculk sensor. Llamas can wear Black Carpet as a decorative rug on their backs. One Black Carpet smelts 0.335 items as furnace fuel in Java Edition, and shepherd villagers sell carpets of any color. Recoloring stays open too: since Java Edition 1.20, any carpet plus one black dye — crafted from an ink sac or a wither rose — becomes 1 Black Carpet, while Bedrock Edition turns 8 white carpets and 1 black dye into 8 black carpets.

Place Black Carpet over a light-emitting block in the floor. The room stays fully lit because Black Carpet does not decrease light passing through.

Put Black Carpet on top of a fence or wall. The player can jump onto the carpeted fence, while mobs never try to jump over fences or walls, even with a carpet above.
