Shepherd villagers sell carpets, and Red Carpet generates naturally in igloo basements (present in 50% of igloos), snowy tundra villages, savanna villages, and taiga villages. Red Carpet breaks with any tool or a bare hand — shears bring no speed bonus, unlike with wool — stacks to 64, and has hardness and blast resistance of only 0.1. Lava sets Red Carpet on fire, and flammability runs 60 in Java Edition and 30 in Bedrock Edition.

Red Carpet blocks mob spawning, giving floors and paths a spawn-proof finish: mobs have been unable to spawn on carpets since Java Edition 1.8. Light passes through Red Carpet without loss, so a light-emitting block hidden in the floor keeps the room bright with no visible torch. Red Carpet over a fence or a wall stops animals and mobs from crossing while the player can still jump up. A hopper under Red Carpet keeps collecting items. Red Carpet muffles sculk sensors exactly like wool — placing, breaking, or walking on carpets creates no vibration. Equip Red Carpet on a tamed llama for a patterned rug on the llama's back; a dispenser dresses tamed llamas automatically, and shears remove the rug. In Java Edition, Red Carpet serves as furnace fuel at 0.335 smelted items per carpet.
