Description

Red Dye is a primary dye in Minecraft used to color wool, terracotta, glass, concrete, beds, banners, candles, leather armor, and shulker boxes. You make it by crafting one poppy, one beetroot, or one red tulip into a single red dye, while a rose bush yields two. Red Dye is fully renewable because poppies, red tulips, and beetroot can be farmed without limit. Beyond direct coloring, it mixes with other dyes to create new colors: red plus white makes pink dye, red plus yellow makes orange dye, and red plus blue makes purple dye. You can also apply it to a sheep to get red wool, to a wolf or cat collar, and to a loom for banner patterns. Red Dye behaves the same in Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. Before the 1.14 Village & Pillage update the item was called Rose Red, but the modern id is minecraft:red_dye.

Java & Bedrock Guide

How to make and use Red Dye in Minecraft

  1. 1

Gather a red flower or beetroot

Pick a poppy or red tulip from grassland, or harvest beetroot from a farm. A rose bush from plains and meadows works too and yields more dye.

  2. 2

    Craft the red dye

Place a single poppy, beetroot, or red tulip anywhere in the crafting grid to get one red dye. A rose bush gives two red dye per craft.

  3. 3

    Dye your block or item

Combine red dye with wool, terracotta, glass, concrete, a bed, a candle, or leather armor in the crafting grid to color it red.

  4. 4

    Mix new colors

Add red dye to white, yellow, or blue dye to craft pink, orange, or purple dye respectively.

Edition note

Red Dye behaves identically in Java and Bedrock Edition. Before the 1.14 Village & Pillage update this item was named Rose Red.
