Description

Beetroot crops follow the same cultivation requirements as wheat: farmland, water within four blocks, light of at least nine overhead. Unlike most crops, the drop rate per harvest is lower — fully ripe plants give one unit and zero to three seeds, making output somewhat unpredictable. Seeds are found in village chests or drop from breaking the crop early. The raw vegetable restores just one hunger point on its own, but it functions as a crafting ingredient for beetroot soup, which gives six hunger points at the cost of a bowl. Red dye can also be crafted from a single beetroot, offering an early alternative to roses or poppies for wool coloring. Pigs breed using this item. The crop's lower per-block efficiency compared with carrots or potatoes means players often keep only a modest patch unless they specifically need the seeds for soup ingredients or dye sourcing.

Java & Bedrock Guide

How to grow and use Beetroot in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Get beetroot seeds

Find beetroot seeds in village chests, dungeon chests, and mineshaft minecart chests, or harvest them directly from beetroot plots in village farms.

  2. 2

    Prepare hydrated farmland

Till dirt or grass with a hoe next to water (within four blocks) so the farmland stays hydrated, and keep a light level of at least nine above it.

  3. 3

    Plant and grow the crop

Right-click the tilled soil with beetroot seeds. Beetroot passes through four growth stages; bone meal speeds it through these stages instantly.

  4. 4

    Harvest the beetroot

Break a fully grown beetroot plant to collect one beetroot plus zero to three seeds, then replant the seeds to keep the patch going.

  5. 5

    Eat or craft the beetroot

Eat beetroot raw for one hunger point, combine six beetroots and a bowl for beetroot soup worth six points, or craft one beetroot into red dye.

Lower yield than other crops

Beetroot restores only one hunger point raw, far less than carrots or potatoes, so most players keep a small patch and grow it mainly for soup, red dye, or breeding pigs.

Frequently asked questions

Can you eat beetroot raw in Minecraft?

Yes. Raw beetroot restores one hunger point and 1.2 saturation. For more food value, craft six beetroots and a bowl into beetroot soup, which restores six hunger points.

Where do you find beetroot seeds?

Beetroot seeds are found in village chests, dungeon chests, and mineshaft minecart chests, and you can harvest them directly from beetroot plots in village farms.

How do you make red dye from beetroot?

Place a single beetroot anywhere in the crafting grid to produce one red dye, an early-game alternative to poppies and red tulips for coloring wool.

How many growth stages does beetroot have?

Beetroot has four growth stages, fewer than the eight stages of wheat, carrots, and potatoes. Bone meal advances beetroot through these stages instantly.

Can you breed pigs with beetroot?

Yes. Pigs are bred with beetroot, carrots, or potatoes. Hold the item and feed two adult pigs to make them enter love mode and produce a piglet.
