Description

Stone is the most abundant block in the Minecraft Overworld, making up the majority of underground terrain. It generates between bedrock and the surface in nearly every biome. Stone requires a wooden pickaxe or better to be mined; using anything else drops nothing. When mined with a Silk Touch pickaxe, stone drops itself; otherwise it drops cobblestone. Stone is the base material for crafting tools and weapons stronger than wood: stone pickaxe, stone axe, stone sword, and the smithing chain. Smelted further, stone becomes smooth stone — a popular building material — and can be cut into stone bricks, slabs, and stairs at a stonecutter.

How to get Stone in Minecraft

  1. 1

Mine stone with a wooden pickaxe

Dig into a hillside or a cave below sea level with a wooden pickaxe or better; without Silk Touch, stone drops as cobblestone.

  2. 2

    Smelt cobblestone into stone

Place cobblestone in the top slot of a furnace with any fuel; each piece smelts back into one stone block.

  3. 3

Or use a Silk Touch pickaxe

A pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch mines stone directly, collecting the stone block and skipping the furnace step entirely.

  4. 4

    Process stone at a stonecutter

Place stone on a stonecutter to cut stone bricks, slabs, and stairs, or smelt stone again to make smooth stone.

Tip

A cobblestone generator built with lava and water gives unlimited cobblestone, making stone a fully renewable building material.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get stone in Minecraft?

Smelt cobblestone in a furnace to turn it into stone, or mine stone with a Silk Touch pickaxe to collect the block directly.

What pickaxe do you need to mine stone?

A wooden pickaxe is the minimum; weaker tools break stone but drop nothing. Iron or diamond pickaxes mine it faster.

What is the difference between stone and cobblestone?

Mining stone normally yields cobblestone, a rougher block. Smelting cobblestone or using Silk Touch gives the smooth gray stone back.

Is stone renewable in Minecraft?

Yes. A cobblestone generator produces endless cobblestone, which you smelt into stone, so stone is effectively unlimited.

What can you make from stone?

Stone crafts into stone tools, slabs and stairs, a stonecutter, and a furnace, and smelts into smooth stone for modern builds.
