Description

Chest is crafted from eight planks of any wood type arranged in a hollow square on the crafting grid. The device offers twenty-seven inventory slots — enough to start any base — and visually opens with a hinged lid animation when right-clicked. Two adjacent units automatically merge into a double-wide variant with fifty-four slots, the standard storage block of every base above the early game.

A few quirks define the reputation of this storage. A solid opaque block placed directly above prevents the lid from opening, blocking access — a useful trap or a frustrating bug depending on the build. Cats seek out chests to sit on, and a chest with a cat sitting on top stays shut until the cat stands up. Hoppers, droppers, and storage minecarts interact smoothly, and the comparator output reads inventory fill level for automation. Despite the wooden look, the chest does not catch fire and cannot be burned by fire or lava, but it is easily destroyed by explosions, so most large bases store valuables in obsidian-encased rooms.

How to craft and use a Chest in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft the chest

Place 8 wooden planks of any type around the edges of the 3x3 crafting grid, leaving the center empty, to make one chest.

  2. 2

    Place and open it

Set the chest on any solid surface and right-click or tap it to open the 27-slot storage interface.

  3. 3

    Build a double chest

Place a second chest directly beside the first along the same axis; the two merge into a 54-slot double chest sharing one interface.

  4. 4

    Automate with hoppers

Attach a hopper to the chest to move items automatically, and read its fill level with a comparator for redstone contraptions.

Important

A solid opaque block placed directly above a chest blocks the lid and prevents the chest from opening; leave glass or open space above storage rooms — a bottom slab works only in Java Edition, and in Bedrock Edition even a slab blocks the lid.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a double chest?

Place two chests directly next to each other along the same horizontal axis. They automatically combine into one double chest with 54 slots.

Why won't my chest open?

A solid opaque block sitting directly on top of a chest blocks the lid animation. Replace the block above with glass — a slab works only in Java Edition, while in Bedrock Edition even a slab blocks the chest.

How many items does a chest hold?

A single chest has 27 slots and a double chest has 54 slots. Each slot stacks up to 64 of most stackable items.

Can a chest catch fire?

No. Despite being made of wood, a chest does not catch fire and cannot be burned by fire or lava. The real threat is explosions: with a blast resistance of only 2.5, a chest rarely survives creepers or TNT.

What is a trapped chest?

A trapped chest looks like a normal chest but emits a redstone signal when opened. Craft it by combining a chest with a tripwire hook.
