Description

Spruce Planks come from spruce logs felled in taiga, snowy taiga, and the towering old-growth taiga biomes. Four planks are produced per log on the crafting grid, the same yield as every other wood family in the game. Compared to oak or birch, the texture is noticeably darker — almost chocolate brown — and the grain pattern is sharp enough to read across an entire wall, which is why builders pick this variant for log cabins, ski lodges, and rustic interiors that need warmth without going black.

Like all wood, the material burns in fire and lava, can be smelted as fuel (one and a half items per plank), and forms the basis for doors, fences, slabs, stairs, signs, boats, ladders, and chests of the matching wood. Spruce trees can also grow as 2×2 megas when four saplings are planted together, giving prolific players an entire taiga's worth of these darker boards from a single sapling cluster.

Guide

How to craft and use Spruce Planks in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Find a spruce tree

Spruce trees grow naturally in taiga, snowy taiga, and old-growth taiga biomes. They appear as tall conifers with dark green leaf canopies. Use any axe — or even your fist — to chop the trunk and collect spruce logs.

  2. 2

    Craft Spruce Planks

Open your crafting grid (2×2 inventory grid or 3×3 crafting table). Place 1 Spruce Log in any single slot. This produces 4 Spruce Planks instantly — the same yield ratio as all other wood types in the game.

  3. 3

    Use Spruce Planks in building

Spruce Planks have a distinctive dark chocolate-brown texture, making them ideal for log cabins, ski lodges, rustic interiors, and mountain builds. Place them directly as floor, wall, or ceiling blocks to achieve a warm, dark wood aesthetic.

  4. 4

    Craft wood-based items

Spruce Planks are the base material for many spruce-type items: spruce doors, trapdoors, fences, fence gates, slabs, stairs, signs, buttons, pressure plates, boats, and chests. Combine planks with sticks — crafted from 2 planks — to make additional tools and components.

  5. 5

    Use as furnace fuel

If you have surplus Spruce Planks, use them as fuel in a furnace or smoker. Each plank smelts 1.5 items, making them an efficient early-game fuel source alongside coal.

Tip

Plant 4 spruce saplings in a 2×2 arrangement and bonemeal one of them to grow a massive mega spruce tree. A single mega spruce yields dozens of logs — far more than a normal spruce — giving you a huge supply of Spruce Planks from a compact farm.

Frequently asked questions

How do you craft Spruce Planks in Minecraft?

Place 1 Spruce Log in any slot of a crafting grid — the 2×2 inventory grid or the 3×3 crafting table both work. This produces 4 Spruce Planks. No crafting table is required since the recipe fits in the 1-slot inventory grid.

Where do spruce logs come from?

Spruce logs drop from spruce trees found in taiga, snowy taiga, and old-growth (mega) taiga biomes. All three biome types generate naturally in cold or mountainous regions of a Minecraft world.

Are Spruce Planks flammable?

Yes. Spruce Planks are flammable and will catch fire from adjacent flames or lava. They share the same flammability as all other wood planks in the game. Avoid using them near fire sources in survival builds unless protected.

Can Spruce Planks be used as furnace fuel?

Yes. Each Spruce Plank smelts 1.5 items in a furnace or smoker, making them useful as early-game fuel when coal is scarce.

What is the difference between Spruce Planks and Oak Planks?

Spruce Planks and Oak Planks have identical stats — same blast resistance of 3, same flammability, same fuel value, and the same 1-log-to-4-planks craft ratio. The only difference is their appearance: Spruce Planks are significantly darker with a chocolate-brown tone and sharper grain, while Oak Planks are light tan. They are not interchangeable in wood-type-specific recipes like boats.

Do you need any tool to mine Spruce Planks?

No special tool is required. Spruce Planks can be broken by hand and will always drop themselves. Using an axe speeds up the process, but the block always drops regardless of the tool used.
