Spruce Fence Gate
Spruce Fence Gate seals the gap in a spruce fence, crafted from four planks and two sticks, and swings open by hand or redstone.
Description
Spruce Fence Gate is the natural entry point for taiga cabins and snowy-survival bases, where builders pair the gate with a spruce fence to fence in cows, sheep, horses, and foxes while keeping the player's path open. When closed, Spruce Fence Gate acts as a 1.5-block-tall barrier that most hostile and passive mobs cannot jump, and hostile mobs treat a closed gate as solid and cannot spot players standing behind the block. Spruce Fence Gate is flammable and ignites from lava or nearby flames, so builders keep the gate clear of fire sources. Spruce Fence Gate was added to Java Edition in snapshot 14w32b of version 1.8 and to Bedrock Edition in Pocket Edition v0.10.0 alpha build 1, separating the dark brown wood from the oak-only fence gate that shipped at launch.

How to craft and use a Spruce Fence Gate in Minecraft
-
1
Gather spruce planks and sticks
Harvest spruce logs in taiga or snowy taiga biomes, then craft each log into four spruce planks and turn two planks into four sticks on a crafting table.
-
2
Place four planks and two sticks
Set two sticks in the middle column of the 3x3 grid and four spruce planks in the left and right columns to craft one Spruce Fence Gate.
-
3
Place the gate in a fence gap
Right-click between two spruce fence posts to drop the Spruce Fence Gate into the opening and form a continuous barrier.
-
4
Open by hand or redstone
Right-click the Spruce Fence Gate to swing it open, or wire a lever, button, or pressure plate so redstone power opens and closes the gate automatically.
A closed Spruce Fence Gate reads as a 1.5-block-tall wall to most mobs, so cows, sheep, and zombies stay penned while the player walks through.

Frequently asked questions
How do you craft a Spruce Fence Gate?
Place two sticks in the middle column of a crafting table and four spruce planks in the left and right columns to craft one Spruce Fence Gate.
Is the Spruce Fence Gate flammable?
Yes. Spruce Fence Gate is a wooden block and ignites from lava or nearby flames, and each gate also works as furnace fuel that smelts 1.5 items.
Does the Spruce Fence Gate respond to redstone?
Yes. Spruce Fence Gate opens and closes the moment a redstone signal reaches the block, which lets a lever, button, or pressure plate automate the entrance.
Can mobs jump over a closed Spruce Fence Gate?
Most mobs cannot. A closed Spruce Fence Gate reads as a 1.5-block-tall barrier, and hostile mobs treat the closed gate as a solid block and cannot spot players behind it.
Which tool breaks a Spruce Fence Gate fastest?
An axe breaks Spruce Fence Gate faster than any other tool at the hardness of 2 shared by every wooden fence gate.
When was the Spruce Fence Gate added to Minecraft?
Spruce Fence Gate was added to Java Edition in version 1.8 and to Bedrock Edition in Pocket Edition v0.10.0 alpha build 1, splitting the dark wood from the oak-only gate.
