Description

Shears are crafted from two iron ingots, making them one of the smallest but most useful early tools. Their main job is collecting wool from sheep without killing the animal, allowing renewable beds, carpets, banners, and decoration. They also harvest leaves, vines, cobwebs, glow lichen, and other delicate blocks that would otherwise break differently.

The tool has several special interactions. It carves pumpkins into wearable faces and jack o'lantern ingredients, collects honeycomb from full bee homes, and can safely gather plant details for landscaping. Durability is consumed per use, but the material cost is low. For builders, this item is the difference between destroying a natural texture and moving it intact.

How to craft and use Shears in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Craft the shears

Place two iron ingots diagonally in the crafting grid — one in the top-middle slot and one in the middle-left slot — to make one pair of shears with 238 durability.

  2. 2

    Shear sheep for renewable wool

Right-click a sheep with shears to drop 1-3 wool without harming it; the sheep regrows its wool after eating grass, so wool is fully renewable.

  3. 3

    Collect delicate blocks

Break leaves, vines, cobwebs, glow lichen, tall grass, ferns, and seagrass with shears to pick up the block itself instead of its normal drop.

  4. 4

    Use special interactions

Carve a pumpkin into a carved pumpkin, harvest 3 honeycomb from a hive at honey level 5, shear a mooshroom for 5 mushrooms, or disarm tripwire safely.

Honeycomb tip

Place a lit campfire under a beehive or bee nest before shearing honeycomb so the bees stay calm and do not turn hostile.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make shears in Minecraft?

Combine two iron ingots placed diagonally in the crafting grid to create one pair of shears.

What can you collect with shears?

Shears gather wool, leaves, vines, cobwebs, glow lichen, tall grass, ferns, and seagrass as the block itself.

Do shears hurt sheep?

No. Shearing a sheep drops 1-3 wool and the sheep survives, regrowing its wool after eating grass.

How much durability do shears have?

Shears last 238 uses. Unbreaking and Mending extend their lifespan significantly.

Can shears collect honeycomb?

Yes. At honey level 5 a hive gives 3 honeycomb; light a campfire underneath first so the bees stay calm.

Do shears work in both Java and Bedrock Edition?

Yes. Shears behave the same in both editions for shearing, harvesting, and carving.
