Vines
Vines are a climbable plant that spreads across stone and wood surfaces in jungles and swamps, harvested with shears and placed on the sides or undersides of solid blocks.
Description
Spread happens one block at a time: an existing vine can extend horizontally to adjacent wall faces or grow a new block downward, eventually reaching the ground. Bone meal has no effect on vines — spreading happens on its own. With shears, vines drop as a collectible item; without shears they vanish, and no other tool — Silk Touch included — collects them. Vines can be placed manually on the side or bottom faces of solid blocks.
Multiple vines can share one block space facing different directions; breaking any of them removes the whole cluster and yields a single drop. Because vines spread unchecked, a controlled build needs periodic pruning with shears, and in Java Edition the doVinesSpread game rule can disable the growth entirely. Sneaking lets the player hang on the vine in place, absorbing all fall damage.

Java & Bedrock Guide
How to harvest and place Vines in Minecraft
-
1
Find Vines in the wild
Locate Vines hanging on trees in jungle, swamp, and mangrove swamp biomes, or growing inside lush caves and woodland mansions.
-
2
Harvest with shears
Hold shears and break the Vine block to collect it as an item; breaking Vines by hand or with any other tool destroys them with no drop.
-
3
Place on a solid face
Aim at the side or bottom face of a solid block and right-click to attach Vines; they cling to walls and hang from ceilings.
-
4
Climb and control growth
Hold the jump key next to a vine to climb it like a ladder — walking into it also works when a solid block sits behind — and trim spreading Vines with shears to manage their growth.
Vines are flammable and carry fire quickly across connected blocks, so keep them away from lava, torches, and other fire sources in wooden builds.

Frequently asked questions
Can you craft Vines in Minecraft?
No, Vines cannot be crafted. You obtain Vines only by harvesting existing ones with shears or by finding them in jungle, swamp, and lush cave biomes.
How do you collect Vines without destroying them?
Use shears to break Vines and they drop as a collectible item. Breaking them by hand or with any other tool makes them disappear with no drop.
Can you climb Vines like a ladder?
Yes. Hold the jump key next to Vines to climb up and down like a ladder; when a solid block sits directly behind, walking into the vine climbs it as well.
Are Vines renewable?
Yes, Vines are renewable. A placed vine spreads to nearby block faces over time on its own — bone meal does nothing — and wandering traders sell 3 vines for 1 emerald, so you can farm them endlessly.
Can Vines be composted?
Yes. Adding Vines to a composter has a 50% chance to raise the compost level, making them a cheap source of bone meal.
