Description

Carved Pumpkin is created by using shears on a regular pumpkin, which carves the front face into the classic jack-o-lantern grin and drops four pumpkin seeds — useful for replanting. The block can also be obtained directly from pillager outpost loot or from raid-trophy containers, though shears-on-pumpkin is the standard method.

The most useful unique property is its wearable status: equipping the block in the helmet slot turns the player's view into a pumpkin-mask perspective with eye-holes for visibility, and most importantly, makes endermen ignore the player even when looked at directly — solving the otherwise constant aggression problem in the End dimension. The block is also the head ingredient for two iconic golems: stack two snow blocks vertically and place a carved pumpkin on top to spawn a snow golem; arrange four iron blocks in a T-shape and place a carved pumpkin on top to spawn an iron golem. Combining with a torch on the crafting grid produces a jack o'lantern.

How to make and use a Carved Pumpkin in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Find a pumpkin

Locate a grown pumpkin, which spawns naturally on grass blocks across most overworld biomes, or harvest one from a pumpkin stem you planted with pumpkin seeds.

  2. 2

    Carve it with shears

Use shears on the placed pumpkin to cut the jack-o-lantern face; the block becomes a Carved Pumpkin and drops four pumpkin seeds for replanting.

  3. 3

    Wear it against endermen

Equip the Carved Pumpkin in the helmet slot to view the world through eye-holes and look directly at endermen without provoking them — ideal for End raids.

  4. 4

Spawn golems or craft a lantern

Place a Carved Pumpkin on two stacked snow blocks for a snow golem, or on four iron blocks in a T-shape for an iron golem; combine it with a torch to craft a jack o'lantern.

Version note

Before Java Edition 1.13 (The Flattening), pumpkins generated already carved and were used directly for golems. Since 1.13, a plain pumpkin must be cut with shears first to obtain a Carved Pumpkin.

Frequently asked questions

How do you carve a pumpkin in Minecraft?

Use shears on a placed pumpkin. It becomes a Carved Pumpkin with the jack-o-lantern face and drops four pumpkin seeds you can replant.

Does wearing a Carved Pumpkin stop endermen from attacking?

Yes. With a Carved Pumpkin in the helmet slot you can look directly at endermen without making them hostile, though it adds a mask overlay that narrows your view.

How do you build an iron golem with a Carved Pumpkin?

Place four iron blocks in a T-shape, then set a Carved Pumpkin on the top-center block. The iron golem spawns instantly if there is open space around it.

Can you craft a Carved Pumpkin?

No. A Carved Pumpkin is made by shearing a pumpkin, and it can also be found in pillager outpost chests and as a raid reward.

What is the difference between a Carved Pumpkin and a Jack o'Lantern?

A Jack o'Lantern is a Carved Pumpkin combined with a torch and emits a light level of 15, while a Carved Pumpkin gives off no light.
