Glow Lichen
Glow Lichen is a multifaced glowing patch — clings to any surface, emits soft light level 7, decorative and renewable cave illumination.
Description
Unlike most light sources, this material is renewable through bone meal: applying bone meal to existing lichen causes it to spread outward to adjacent stone-family surfaces, allowing builders to grow large glowing patches across cave walls without manual placement. Shears collect the block as an item; mining without shears destroys it. Stacking lichen on multiple sides of the same block is fully supported and gives the block additional decorative depth. The block is one of the cleanest ways to add ambient cave lighting without resorting to torches or Sea-Pickle bushes.

How to get and use Glow Lichen in Minecraft
-
1
Find it underground
Explore caves below Y=63 in most overworld biomes. Glow Lichen grows on stone, deepslate, and dripstone walls, floors, and ceilings.
-
2
Collect it with shears
Mine the lichen with shears to drop it as an item. Breaking it with anything else destroys the block and gives nothing.
-
3
Place it on any surface
Right-click a face of a solid block to attach a lichen patch. You can stack separate patches on up to all six faces of one block.
-
4
Spread it with bone meal
Use bone meal on placed lichen to grow it onto adjacent stone-family surfaces, covering large areas without placing each patch by hand.
Light level 7 does not fully stop hostile spawns, which need light level 0. Add brighter lighting if you want a guaranteed mob-free area.

Frequently asked questions
Can you craft Glow Lichen?
No. Glow Lichen has no crafting recipe — you collect it with shears from cave surfaces below Y=63.
What light level does Glow Lichen emit?
It emits light level 7, a soft glow that marks passages but does not fully prevent hostile mob spawning.
Is Glow Lichen renewable?
Yes. Bone meal spreads an existing patch onto neighboring stone-family blocks, so it can be farmed indefinitely.
How do you collect Glow Lichen?
Mine it with shears. Any other tool breaks the block and drops nothing.
Does Glow Lichen work in Java and Bedrock?
Yes. It was added in version 1.17 (Caves & Cliffs Part 1) and behaves the same in both editions.
Can Glow Lichen be waterlogged?
Yes. It shares its space with water, so it stays in place on submerged cave walls.
