Description

The Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template is a Minecraft item, added in Java Edition 1.20 (Trails & Tales), that gates the conversion of Diamond gear into Netherite gear at a Smithing Table. The Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template generates in Bastion Remnant chests in the Nether, with a guaranteed copy inside the treasure-type bastion and high odds in the other three bastion variants. To upgrade a tool or armor piece, the player places the template in the top slot of the Smithing Table, the Diamond item in the middle slot, and one Netherite Ingot in the bottom slot. The Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template is consumed on each successful upgrade, so one template equals one upgraded piece. Players can duplicate the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template by combining it with seven Diamonds and one Netherrack in the Smithing Table, which returns two templates. Before 1.20 the upgrade required only a Netherite Ingot; the template was introduced to make Netherite progression a deliberate Bastion exploration goal.

How to use a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template in Minecraft

    Travel through the Nether and search for a Bastion Remnant; the treasure-type bastion always contains one Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template in its central treasure chest.

    Place or find a Smithing Table in a village blacksmith or craft one from two Iron Ingots and four Wood Planks, then right-click it to open the upgrade interface.

    Put the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template in the top slot of the Smithing Table; this slot is reserved for the upgrade or trim template.

    Add Diamond gear and a Netherite Ingot

    Place a Diamond tool, weapon, or armor piece in the middle slot and one Netherite Ingot in the bottom slot to complete the recipe.

    Drag the upgraded Netherite item out of the result slot; the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template is consumed and the Diamond item keeps its enchantments.
