How to make a Netherite Pickaxe
-
1
Get a Diamond Pickaxe
You need a finished Diamond Pickaxe as the base item. The Netherite Pickaxe is an upgrade, not a fresh 3x3 craft, so keep your best enchanted diamond pickaxe — its enchantments carry over.
-
2
Make a Netherite Ingot
Smelt Ancient Debris into Netherite Scrap, then combine 4 Netherite Scrap with 4 Gold Ingots in the crafting grid to get one Netherite Ingot.
-
3
Open a Smithing Table
Place a Smithing Table and open it. This is the only block that performs netherite upgrades; you cannot do this in a normal crafting table.
-
4
Apply the upgrade
Put the Diamond Pickaxe and the Netherite Ingot into the Smithing Table, then take out your Netherite Pickaxe with 2031 durability and faster mining.
Since Java Edition 1.20, the smithing recipe also requires a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template in the first slot, alongside the Diamond Pickaxe and Netherite Ingot.

Frequently asked questions
What is the durability of a Netherite Pickaxe?
It has 2031 durability, the highest of any pickaxe in vanilla Minecraft. By comparison, the Diamond Pickaxe has only 1561.
How do you craft a Netherite Pickaxe?
You do not craft it in a 3x3 grid. You upgrade a Diamond Pickaxe with one Netherite Ingot at a Smithing Table. Since Java Edition 1.20 you also need a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template.
Can a Netherite Pickaxe mine more blocks than a Diamond Pickaxe?
No. It shares the diamond mining tier, so it mines the same blocks, including obsidian and ancient debris. It is just slightly faster.
Does a Netherite Pickaxe burn in lava?
No. Netherite gear is fire- and lava-resistant. If dropped, it floats on lava instead of being destroyed.
What enchantments work on a Netherite Pickaxe?
It accepts standard pickaxe enchantments: Efficiency, Unbreaking, Fortune, Silk Touch, and Mending.
