Description

The Diamond Pickaxe is the second-strongest pickaxe in Minecraft, crafted from 3 diamonds and 2 sticks on a crafting table. A Diamond Pickaxe has 1,561 durability and mines stone-type blocks with a speed multiplier of 8, faster than iron. The Diamond Pickaxe is required to harvest the hardest materials in the game: only diamond and netherite tools can break obsidian, crying obsidian, ancient debris, and the respawn anchor. Players enchant the Diamond Pickaxe with Efficiency V, Unbreaking III, Fortune III or Silk Touch, and Mending to speed up mining, extend its lifespan, and multiply ore drops. Using a smithing table, 1 netherite ingot, and a Netherite Upgrade smithing template, the Diamond Pickaxe upgrades into a Netherite Pickaxe in Java and Bedrock Edition 1.20 and later.

Crafting & Usage Guide

How to craft and use a Diamond Pickaxe in Minecraft

  1. 1

Gather 3 diamonds and 2 sticks

Mine diamond ore with an iron or diamond pickaxe at around Y -59 and craft 2 sticks from any planks.

  2. 2

    Craft the pickaxe

Place 3 diamonds across the top row of a crafting table and 2 sticks down the center column to make 1 Diamond Pickaxe.

  3. 3

    Mine high-tier blocks

Use the Diamond Pickaxe to break obsidian, ancient debris, and ores that iron and stone pickaxes cannot harvest.

  4. 4

    Enchant the pickaxe

Apply Efficiency V, Fortune III, and Unbreaking III at an enchanting table or anvil to boost speed, drops, and durability.

  5. 5

    Upgrade to netherite

Combine the Diamond Pickaxe with 1 netherite ingot and a Netherite Upgrade template in a smithing table to get a Netherite Pickaxe.

Version note

Smithing-template upgrading was added in 1.20; in 1.16–1.19 the netherite upgrade needed only an ingot, with no template.
