How to make a Netherite Axe
-
1
Get a Diamond Axe
Craft or obtain a Diamond Axe first. The netherite upgrade keeps its enchantments, so you can use one you already enchanted.
-
2
Find a Netherite Ingot
Mine Ancient Debris in the Nether, smelt it into Netherite Scrap, then combine 4 scrap with 4 Gold Ingots to craft one Netherite Ingot.
-
3
Open a Smithing Table
Place and open a Smithing Table. Unlike older recipes, the axe is upgraded here, not on the 3x3 crafting grid.
-
4
Upgrade the axe
Put the Diamond Axe and the Netherite Ingot into the Smithing Table to receive the Netherite Axe with 10 damage and 2031 durability.
Since Java Edition 1.20 the upgrade also requires a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template in the leftmost slot of the Smithing Table, alongside the Diamond Axe and the Netherite Ingot.

Frequently asked questions
How much damage does a Netherite Axe do?
It deals 10 attack damage in Java Edition, one more than the diamond axe's 9, making it the highest melee damage of any standard weapon.
How do you make a Netherite Axe?
You upgrade a Diamond Axe with one Netherite Ingot at a Smithing Table. It is not crafted on the 3x3 grid.
What is the durability of a Netherite Axe?
It has 2031 durability, compared to 1561 for the diamond axe.
