Transformer is an upgrade item inserted into an Industrial Craft 2 machine, raising the machine's energy input tier from 32 EU/t to 128 EU/t.
Description
Crafting one Transformer takes five Glass, two Gold Cables, one MV-Transformer, and one Electronic Circuit: three Glass across the top of the crafting grid, a Gold Cable on each side of the centre, and Glass, Electronic Circuit, Glass along the bottom row. With three Transformers installed, even a Macerator can be powered directly from a Lapotron Crystal. Removing a Transformer from an active or powered machine risks an explosion; the IC2 upgrade page simply advises against removal.

Craft the Transformer
Place one MV-Transformer in the centre of a crafting grid, one Gold Cable on each side of the centre, three Glass across the top row, and Glass, Electronic Circuit, Glass across the bottom row.

Open the machine GUI and hover the blue-and-white information icon to see whether that specific machine accepts Transformer upgrades.

Insert the Transformer
Drop the Transformer into an upgrade slot, usually on the right-hand side of the machine GUI, and the machine's energy input tier rises by one.

Stack Transformers for higher tiers
A second Transformer lifts a 32 EU/t machine to 512 EU/t. A third Transformer lets a Macerator run directly from a Lapotron Crystal.
Removing a Transformer from an active or powered machine can end in an explosion, and the IC2 upgrade page advises simply not to do it.

The Transformer and the MV-Transformer are different objects: the Transformer is an upgrade item that raises a machine's input tier, while the MV-Transformer is a placed block stepping 512 EU/t down to 128 EU/t or the reverse, depending on mode.
Does a Transformer upgrade add energy storage to a machine?
The Transformer upgrade only raises the input tier. Energy storage belongs to the Energy Storage Upgrade, which adds 10,000 EU per module.
