Description

Thick Neutron Reflector is an Industrial Craft 2 nuclear reactor component that passively raises the EU and heat output of every adjacent fuel rod. A Fuel Rod standing next to a neutron reflector produces 10 EU/t and 12 heat — exactly as much as each rod in a pair of adjacent rods, because the reflector bounces the rod's own neutron pulse back to it. Thick Neutron Reflector produces no energy on its own; every point of gain comes from the reflected pulses of neighboring fuel rods. With 120,000 durability, Thick Neutron Reflector survives a reactor cycle and a half next to a Quad Uranium rod, while the basic Neutron Reflector carries 30,000 durability for single rods.

Players craft one Thick Neutron Reflector on a crafting table from 4 Neutron Reflectors and 5 Copper arranged in a checkerboard: reflectors on the edges of the 3×3 grid, Copper in the corners and the center. Six Thick Neutron Reflectors, Dense Copper and Iridium combine into the Iridium Reflector, a reflector that never loses durability, and six thick reflectors also anchor the Nuke recipe. For reactor designs that keep quad rods running for full cycles, Thick Neutron Reflector is the version sized for the job.

Guide

How to craft and use the Thick Neutron Reflector in Industrial Craft 2

  1. 1

    Craft the basic Neutron Reflectors

Craft 4 Neutron Reflectors first, because the Thick Neutron Reflector recipe is built from them.

  2. 2

    Assemble the checkerboard recipe

Place the 4 Neutron Reflectors on the edges of the 3×3 crafting grid and 5 Copper in the corners and the center; the recipe yields 1 Thick Neutron Reflector.

  3. 3

Install the reflector next to fuel rods

Put the Thick Neutron Reflector into the reactor grid so that at least one fuel rod occupies a directly adjacent cell — a reflector only serves rods it touches.

  4. 4

    Track durability across the cycle

Quad rods drain 4 durability points per reactor tick; at 120,000 durability the Thick Neutron Reflector lasts a cycle and a half next to a Quad Uranium rod, so craft a replacement before the old one disintegrates.

  5. 5

    Upgrade to the Iridium Reflector

Combine 6 Thick Neutron Reflectors, 2 Dense Copper and 1 Iridium into an Iridium Reflector that never loses durability.

No output of its own

Thick Neutron Reflector generates no EU and no heat on its own — every point of extra output comes from the fuel rods whose pulses the reflector bounces back.

Frequently asked questions

Which neutron reflector matches which fuel rod?

The basic Neutron Reflector holds 30,000 durability, enough for a cycle and a half next to a single Fuel Rod. Thick Neutron Reflector holds 120,000 and covers the same runtime next to a Quad Uranium rod; the Iridium Reflector never wears out.

How fast does a Thick Neutron Reflector wear down?

Every reflected pulse costs 1 durability point, so a dual rod drains 2 points and a quad rod 4 points per reactor tick. A Thick Neutron Reflector squeezed between four quad rods loses 16 durability per reactor tick.

What is the Thick Neutron Reflector used for besides reflecting?

Six Thick Neutron Reflectors form the core of the Nuke recipe; the same count, plus 2 Dense Copper and 1 Iridium, crafts the Iridium Reflector.

Does a reflected fuel rod also produce more heat?

Yes: a neutron reflector raises the heat output of adjacent rods together with the EU output. Plan extra cooling for every rod a reflector serves.
