Description

Iridium Neutron Reflector is a Nuclear Reactor component in Industrial Craft 2 that passively raises the efficiency of every adjacent fuel rod by reflecting neutron pulses back into the rod. A single Fuel Rod (Uranium) placed beside Iridium Neutron Reflector produces 10 EU/t and 12 heat — the same figures as each rod of a running pair, because the reflected pulse counts as a neutron pulse from a neighbor. Unlike the craftable Neutron Reflector with 30,000 durability and the Thick Neutron Reflector with 120,000, Iridium Neutron Reflector has no durability bar at all: reflected pulses deal no damage, so one crafted reflector serves cycle after cycle indefinitely. The recipe is deliberately expensive — six Thick Neutron Reflectors, two Dense Copper Plates and one Iridium Plate — and the component exists only in IC2 Experimental, the Minecraft Forge build of the mod for the Java Edition; the site's reference catalog version is 1.12.2.

In reactor layouts Iridium Neutron Reflector takes the permanent slots: a Thick Neutron Reflector surrounded by four Quad Fuel Rods (Uranium) loses 16 durability every reactor tick, while Iridium Neutron Reflector shrugs off the same neutron load forever. Every reflected pulse raises heat alongside output, so cooling must grow with each reflector added — a pair built from one rod and one reflector burns exactly as hot as a pair built from two rods. For long-term energy farms the one-time iridium price buys a maintenance-free component that Neutron Reflector and Thick Neutron Reflector cannot match, because both cheaper reflectors disintegrate mid-run and need recrafting. A reflector never generates EU on its own: Iridium Neutron Reflector only multiplies what the adjacent fuel rods already produce.

Java Edition Guide

How to craft and install the Iridium Neutron Reflector

  1. 1

    Craft the base Neutron Reflector

Place four Tin Dust in the corners of the crafting grid, four Coal Dust on the edges and one Copper Plate in the center to craft a Neutron Reflector.

  2. 2

Upgrade to the Thick Neutron Reflector

Put four Neutron Reflectors in the corners of a new grid and fill the edges plus the center with five Copper Plates; the result is one Thick Neutron Reflector.

  3. 3

    Assemble the Iridium Neutron Reflector

Set one Iridium Plate in the grid center, one Dense Copper Plate to each side of it and six Thick Neutron Reflectors in the remaining cells; the recipe also works rotated vertically.

  4. 4

Load the reflector into the Nuclear Reactor

Open the Nuclear Reactor interface and drop Iridium Neutron Reflector into a chamber slot directly next to a fuel rod, because the reflected pulse only reaches adjacent cells.

  5. 5

    Balance the heat before starting

Add cooling components for every reflected pulse — the example uranium rod runs at 10 EU/t and 12 heat — and only then switch the Nuclear Reactor on.

Why the iridium version pays off

A Thick Neutron Reflector next to a single Quad Fuel Rod (Uranium) survives about one and a half cycles, and surrounded by four quads it burns 16 durability per reactor tick. Iridium Neutron Reflector takes no damage at all, so permanent farm layouts never spend resources on replacement reflectors.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Iridium Neutron Reflector wear out?

No. Iridium Neutron Reflector has no durability and takes no damage from reflected pulses, while the Neutron Reflector (30,000 durability) and the Thick Neutron Reflector (120,000) disintegrate once their pool runs empty.

Does the Iridium Neutron Reflector produce EU on its own?

No. A reflector is a passive component; Iridium Neutron Reflector only boosts adjacent fuel rods, and a lone Fuel Rod (Uranium) with a reflected pulse reaches 10 EU/t.

Can one reflector replace a second fuel rod?

Yes. A fuel rod placed next to Iridium Neutron Reflector delivers the same 10 EU/t and 12 heat as each rod of a pair, so the reflector works as an artificial neighbor.

How many fuel rods does one Iridium Neutron Reflector serve?

Iridium Neutron Reflector reflects pulses into every adjacent cell, so one component can feed up to four fuel rods placed above, below and beside it.

Which Minecraft versions include the Iridium Neutron Reflector?

The component belongs to IC2 Experimental for Minecraft Java Edition on Forge; the catalog tracks Iridium Neutron Reflector from 1.6.4 up to 1.12.2, the site's canon build.
