Description

Desertification is a Terraformer Blueprint — a programmed card from the Industrial Craft 2 mod that tells the Terraformer, the mod's terrain-shaping machine, to convert the surrounding landscape into desert. One Desertification blueprint is crafted on a crafting table from an empty Terraformer Blueprint in the center cell and one sand block in each adjacent cell: top, bottom, left, and right. A powered Terraformer runs the Desertification program at 4 EU/t (a tick is 1/20 of a second in Minecraft) while receiving energy by cable, for example from an MFE.
The Desertification program replaces dirt with sand, rots plants, melts ice and snow, and plants cacti — a terraforming style the IC2 wiki describes as a way to obtain vast amounts of sand. The IC2 wiki warns that Desertification sets forest fires, so wooden structures and tree farms inside the terraformed area are at risk. A loaded Desertification blueprint is not consumed by the run: placing the card alone in a crafting grid turns the program back into an empty Terraformer Blueprint for the next job.

Guide

How to craft and run the Desertification blueprint in Industrial Craft 2

  1. 1

    Craft an empty Terraformer Blueprint

Place one Circuit in the top-middle cell, one Advanced Circuit in the center, and one Redstone in each bottom corner of a crafting table; the output is the empty Terraformer Blueprint every program, Desertification included, starts from.

  2. 2

    Craft the Desertification blueprint

Put the empty Terraformer Blueprint in the center cell and one sand block in the top, bottom, left, and right cells to form a plus; the crafting table yields one Desertification blueprint.

  3. 3

Load the blueprint into a Terraformer

Right-click the Terraformer with the Desertification blueprint in hand to insert the program; another right-click makes the card pop back out.

  4. 4

    Power the Terraformer by cable

Connect the Terraformer to a power source such as an MFE by cable; the Desertification program then consumes 4 EU per tick.

  5. 5

    Protect flammable builds before starting

Move wooden structures and trees out of the terraformed area: Desertification sets forest fires, rots plants, and replaces dirt with sand while the program runs.

Power draw and duration

A Terraformer drains every EU it can reach, and a complete landscape conversion can take multiple days — plan the power supply and the schedule accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

Is Desertification the cheapest Terraformer program to run?

Desertification and Chilling share the lowest demand in the Terraformer program table at 4 EU per tick. Cultivation needs 20 EU per tick and Flatification tops the table at 40 EU per tick.

What happens when two Terraformers cover the same area?

Both Terraformers keep terraforming the contested ground until one machine runs out of power, because a Terraformer drains all the energy it can reach.

Can I terraform the End?

Yes. The IC2 wiki mentions an achievement called End-game Paradise that involves terraforming the End after defeating the Ender Dragon.

Does Desertification work without Industrial Craft 2?

No. Desertification is an Industrial Craft 2 item: the blueprint, the Terraformer, and the EU power grid all come from the mod.

How much sand does one Desertification run produce?

The IC2 wiki gives no fixed yield: the Terraformer keeps converting dirt into sand around the machine for as long as the power supply lasts.
