Description

Flint is a common item in Minecraft obtained by mining gravel, which has a 10% chance to drop one flint instead of a gravel block. The drop rate climbs with the Fortune enchantment, reaching a guaranteed 100% at Fortune III. Flint cannot be crafted, smelted, or placed as a block — gravel is its only renewable source. Players use flint to craft two essential items: combine flint with an iron ingot to make Flint and Steel for lighting fires and igniting Nether portals, or stack flint above a stick and a feather to craft four arrows for a bow or crossbow. Apprentice-level Fletcher villagers also buy flint for emeralds, making gravel pits a steady early-game income source. Because gravel is abundant on beaches, riverbeds, in caves, and across the Nether, flint is easy to farm in both Java and Bedrock editions.

How to get Flint in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Find gravel

Look for gravel on beaches, riverbeds, cave floors, and throughout the Nether, where it generates in large patches.

  2. 2

    Mine the gravel

Break gravel blocks with any tool; a shovel is fastest. Hold the block from below or place a torch under it so the falling gravel breaks instantly.

  3. 3

    Collect the flint drop

Each gravel block has a 10% chance to drop one flint instead of gravel. Keep mining stacks of gravel to gather more.

  4. 4

    Use Fortune for more flint

Mine gravel with a Fortune-enchanted shovel. Fortune III raises the flint drop chance to a guaranteed 100%.

Important

Flint cannot be crafted or smelted. Gravel is the only source, so a Fortune III shovel is the most efficient way to farm large amounts.
