How to get and use the Canning Machine
-
1
Craft a supply of empty cans
Place five tin plates around one glass pane in a crafting grid to press eight empty cans — the consumable every ration is sealed in.
-
2
Connect LV power
Run an LV cable to any of the five working faces (the front face is inert). The Canning Machine buffer holds 800 EU and accepts up to 32 EU per tick.
-
3
Load food and cans
Drop any food into the top slot and empty cans into the bottom one. Food is absorbed for free, and the Calories line banks progress toward the next ration.
-
4
Collect the rations
Every 100 ticks the machine spends 200 EU and one can to press exactly one ration. Identical rations stack to 64, so a dozen slots of scraps become one.
Banked calories survive leaving and rejoining the world but are lost when the block is broken — finish the started ration first. Hazardous food (raw chicken, rotten flesh, poisonous potato, pufferfish, spider eye) is refused, and stew or honey loses its bowl or bottle.

Frequently asked questions
Is processing food in the Canning Machine a net gain?
No. A ration costs 12.0 food value (nutrition plus saturation) and carries only 9.6, so one fifth is always lost — the price of turning every food into one stackable item.
How much energy does one ration need?
One ration takes a 100-tick cycle at 2 EU per tick — 200 EU total — plus one empty tin can. The 800 EU internal buffer covers four rations.
Which food does the Canning Machine refuse?
Raw chicken, rotten flesh, poisonous potato, pufferfish and spider eye are rejected, together with the machine's own rations and anything that is not food. Rabbit stew and honey are accepted, but the bowl or bottle is not returned.
How nutritious is a canned ration?
A ration restores 8 hunger points, the same as a steak, but only 1.6 saturation versus a steak's 12.8, so hunger returns sooner. Eating one takes 1 second.
How is the Canning Machine crafted?
Fill the left and right columns of a crafting grid with six tin plates and place a piston, a machine casing and an electronic circuit down the middle column.
Do banked calories survive breaking the machine?
No. The Calories progress survives leaving and rejoining the world, but breaking the Canning Machine destroys it: food and cans drop out, the banked value is gone.
