Description

Brown Dye is one of the 16 primary dyes in Minecraft, used to colour wool, terracotta, glass, concrete powder, beds, banners, candles, leather armor and shulker boxes brown. You craft Brown Dye from a single cocoa bean placed anywhere in the crafting grid, which yields one dye. Cocoa beans grow as cocoa pods on the sides of jungle tree trunks, so a jungle biome is the easiest renewable source. Brown Dye was added as a standalone item in Java Edition 1.14 (Village & Pillage); before that, cocoa beans acted as the brown dye directly. It works identically in Java and Bedrock Edition. You can also dye a tamed wolf's collar, a cat's collar or a sheep's wool with it. Mixing other dyes is not needed — brown is produced only from cocoa, not by combining colours. Because cocoa beans regrow on jungle logs, Brown Dye is fully renewable.

Java & Bedrock Guide

How to craft and use Brown Dye in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Get a cocoa bean

Harvest a ripe cocoa pod from the side of a jungle tree trunk, or find cocoa beans inside jungle temple chests.

  2. 2

    Craft the dye

Place one cocoa bean anywhere in the crafting grid to produce one Brown Dye; no crafting table is required.

  3. 3

    Dye an item

Combine Brown Dye with wool, terracotta, glass, concrete powder, a bed, a banner or leather armor in the crafting grid to colour it brown.

  4. 4

    Dye a mob

Hold Brown Dye and interact with a sheep, a tamed wolf's collar or a cat's collar to change its colour directly.

Version note

Brown Dye became a separate item in Java Edition 1.14. In older versions, cocoa beans were used directly wherever brown dye is now required.
