Description

Soot (Ala Industrial) is what settles on the ground after a pool of burning oil goes out by itself. Each cell above a solid floor has a 20% chance — set by the server option oilSootChance — to receive a thin, ragged blot the moment the fire dies down; putting the fire out by hand, with water, or with a potion leaves nothing behind, and neither does ordinary fire that never touched oil. The layer is thin enough to walk through, like fresh snow, and almost anything destroys it instantly, but only a shovel actually drops the soot item — a pickaxe or bare hands just make it disappear. A compressor presses 16 soot into one carbon briquette for 260 EU, a slower but cheaper alternative to firing a slag briquette in the alloy smelter, and since it needs nothing but an oil fire and a compressor, it is one of the earliest paths to that briquette.

How to get soot

How to farm Soot with an oil fire in Ala Industrial

    Light an oil pool

    Ignite a pool of oil with flint and steel, or let a nearby fire spread into it. The blaze runs across the whole pool and burns itself out within a few seconds.

    Let the fire burn out on its own

    Do not extinguish the fire by hand, with water, or with a potion — none of these leave soot. Only a fire that dies out naturally has a chance to deposit it.

    Check the chance

    Each cell above a solid floor has a 20% chance (server setting oilSootChance) to get a thin blot of soot once the fire above it goes out; cells over liquid, empty space, or a partial block never get one.

    Collect it with a shovel

    Break the soot layer with a shovel to pick up the Soot item — any other tool, including bare hands, just makes the layer disappear without dropping anything.

    Press it into a carbon briquette

    Feed 16 Soot into a compressor (260 EU) to get one carbon briquette — a slower but cheaper alternative to firing a slag briquette in the alloy smelter.

Tip

An 80-cell oil lake leaves around 16 soot blots on its floor — just enough for one carbon briquette in a single pass.
