Description

Iron Rotor Blade is a crafting component from Industrial Craft 2, and four blades arranged around one Iron Shaft on a crafting grid assemble the Iron Rotor — the rotor a wind turbine spins to turn wind into kinetic energy. One Iron Rotor Blade comes from a shaped recipe: three vanilla Iron Ingots run down the middle column of the grid, and six Industrial Craft 2 Iron fill the left and right columns. The assembled Iron Rotor sweeps a circle 7 blocks in diameter, so the turbine needs clear space around the hub with no blocks and no other rotors inside the sweep.
The Iron Rotor built from Iron Rotor Blades starts generating at wind strength 14 MCW and keeps running above the rated 75 MCW, where excess wind drains durability four times faster than normal. At 0.5 rotor efficiency, the kinetic output equals half the current wind strength, and a Kinetic Generator placed directly beside the running turbine converts the kinetic output into EU. Because a rotor wears out and eventually needs replacing, most players craft a spare set of four Iron Rotor Blades and one Iron Shaft in advance. Wind strength itself depends on height and weather, so the same Iron Rotor produces different amounts of EU at different build sites.

Guide

How to craft Iron Rotor Blade in Industrial Craft 2

  1. 1

    Craft one blade

Open a crafting table, place three vanilla Iron Ingots in the middle column of the 3x3 grid, and fill the left and right columns with six Industrial Craft 2 Iron; the recipe yields one Iron Rotor Blade.

  2. 2

    Assemble the Iron Rotor

Put one Iron Shaft in the center of the crafting grid and place one Iron Rotor Blade above, below, left, and right of the shaft; the plus-shaped recipe returns the finished Iron Rotor.

  3. 3

Install the rotor in the turbine

Open the wind turbine interface and put the Iron Rotor into the rotor slot, keeping a circle 7 blocks in diameter free of blocks and other rotors around the hub.

  4. 4

    Convert the output into EU

Set a Kinetic Generator directly against the running wind turbine; the Kinetic Generator turns the turbine's kinetic units into EU for machines and cables.

Read the wind before building

A wind turbine below height y=64 never reaches the minimum wind strength of 14 MCW, rain adds a 25% wind bonus, and a storm adds 50%, so check the build height and the weather before spending iron on rotors.

Frequently asked questions

Is Iron Rotor Blade a block or an item?

Iron Rotor Blade is an item, a crafting component that never gets placed into the world; only the assembled Iron Rotor goes into a machine interface.

How long does an Iron Rotor built from Iron Rotor Blades last?

The Iron Rotor runs for 86400 seconds before wearing out, and a replacement takes four new Iron Rotor Blades plus one Iron Shaft.

How much iron does one Iron Rotor cost in total?

The official wiki lists the total material cost of one Iron Rotor as 45 Iron, counting every blade and shaft ingredient.

Can several wind turbines stand close together?

Rotor blades must stay clear of blocks and other rotors, and a wind turbine set directly behind another one within three rotor radii causes obstruction; a line or a grid of turbines avoids the problem.

At what height is the wind strongest?

Wind strength peaks near height y=160, while height y=255 has almost no wind at all, so overly tall turbine towers waste materials.
