Insulated HV Cable — Minecraft block

Insulated HV Cable

Insulated HV Cable is the rubber-wrapped IndustrialCraft 2 power line that carries Extreme Voltage packets up to 2048 EU/p across long runs while preventing shock damage to nearby players.

Description

Insulated HV Cable is the rubber-coated version of the HV Cable in IndustrialCraft 2, engineered to transmit Extreme Voltage packets of up to 2048 EU/p across power networks. A single layer of Rubber insulation lowers the energy loss from 1.0 EU per block on a bare HV Cable to 0.95 EU per block, and the rubber sheath completely removes the electric shock damage that an uninsulated core deals to any player standing within roughly one block of an active run. The insulated cable is crafted by placing one bare HV Cable next to one Rubber in a crafting grid, and the same wrapping step can be repeated to stack a 2x Ins. layer at 0.9 EU per block and a 3x Ins. layer at 0.8 EU per block for progressively tighter loss budgets on very long transmission lines.

The cable connects the generators, transformers, and machines rated for Extreme Voltage — most often the output side of an MFE Unit, an HV Transformer, or a nuclear reactor running at high tick rates. In survival builds, the insulated line is the practical default for any power run longer than a dozen blocks, because the one-time Rubber cost pays for itself in saved EU on every packet that crosses the line. The insulation does not raise the 2048 EU/p voltage ceiling of the underlying HV Cable, so feeding Medium or Low Voltage equipment straight off the cable without a step-down transformer will overload and destroy the downstream machines. Keep each run as short as the layout allows, because even at 0.95 EU per block, a 100-block line trims nearly 95 EU from every single packet that travels its full length.

IndustrialCraft 2 Guide

How to insulate an HV Cable in IndustrialCraft 2

  1. 1

    Craft the bare HV Cable

Combine a Refined Iron Plate with a Cutter in a crafting grid to produce the uninsulated HV Cable, the conductive core of the insulated version.

  2. 2

    Collect Rubber

Harvest Sticky Resin from IC2 Rubber Trees using a Treetap, or smelt Slimeballs in a furnace, then craft the raw material into Rubber.

  3. 3

    Apply the first insulation layer

Place the HV Cable and one Rubber in the crafting grid to wrap the cable, producing the Insulated HV Cable with 0.95 EU loss per block.

  4. 4

Stack extra insulation for long runs

Repeat the Rubber step on an Insulated HV Cable to build a 2x Insulated HV Cable at 0.9 EU per block and again for a 3x Insulated HV Cable at 0.8 EU per block when the line spans very long distances.

  5. 5

Place the cable and connect machines

Lay the Insulated HV Cable between an HV Transformer or MFE Unit and any Extreme Voltage machine, keeping the run short to minimise total EU loss.

Voltage safety

Insulated HV Cable carries Extreme Voltage up to 2048 EU/p. Never connect Insulated HV Cable directly to Low or Medium Voltage machines without stepping the voltage down through a transformer, or the machines will explode.

Frequently asked questions

How much EU does an Insulated HV Cable lose per block?

Insulated HV Cable loses 0.95 EU per block from every packet, a small improvement over the 1.0 EU per block loss of an uninsulated HV Cable.

Does Insulated HV Cable shock players?

No. The Rubber insulation completely removes the electric shock damage that a bare HV Cable deals to players standing next to an active run.

What voltage can Insulated HV Cable carry?

Insulated HV Cable is rated for Extreme Voltage up to 2048 EU per packet, the same ceiling as the underlying uninsulated HV Cable.

How do you craft Insulated HV Cable?

Place one HV Cable and one Rubber in a crafting grid. Each extra Rubber layer raises the insulation tier and lowers the per-block EU loss.

How many insulation layers can an HV Cable have?

Up to three. One layer gives 0.95 EU per block, two layers give 0.9 EU per block, and three layers give 0.8 EU per block of energy loss.

What is the difference between Insulated HV Cable and HV Cable?

Insulated HV Cable is an HV Cable wrapped in Rubber. The insulation trades a small crafting cost for lower EU loss per block and full removal of shock damage.
