Description

The Heat Exchanger is an Industrial Craft 2 reactor component that moves heat inside the Nuclear Reactor, pulling 4 hU/s from the reactor hull and 12 hU/s from adjacent components. The heat capacity of 2500 hU is low, so the Heat Exchanger melts down easily whenever the surrounding cooling is insufficient. Components with high heat output should not sit directly next to the Heat Exchanger.

The crafting recipe is shaped in a 3x3 grid and yields one Heat Exchanger from 5 Copper in the corners and center, 3 Tin on the left, right, and bottom edges, and 1 Circuit on the top edge. Three specialized variants that move heat differently are crafted from the Heat Exchanger: the Reactor variant (8 Copper), the Component variant (4 Gold in a plus shape), and the Advanced variant (2 exchangers, 4 Lapis, 2 Circuits, 1 Copper). Beyond the variants, the Rsh Condensator and the Advanced Charging Re Battery recipes also consume Heat Exchangers. A practical approach is to craft several basic exchangers first and convert them into the variant each reactor layout needs.

Guide

How to use the Heat Exchanger in Industrial Craft 2

  1. 1

    Craft the Heat Exchanger

Place 5 Copper in the corners and center of a 3x3 crafting grid, 3 Tin on the left, right, and bottom edges, and 1 Circuit on the top edge to produce one Heat Exchanger.

  2. 2

    Open the Nuclear Reactor

Open the Nuclear Reactor interface and find the component slot where the Heat Exchanger will sit.

  3. 3

Insert the Heat Exchanger next to hot components

Put the Heat Exchanger into a slot adjacent to the hottest components: the part pulls 12 hU/s from adjacent components and only 4 hU/s from the reactor hull.

  4. 4

Check the cooling before starting the reactor

The heat capacity of 2500 hU is low, so confirm the layout has sufficient cooling before the reactor runs, or the Heat Exchanger melts down.

  5. 5

    Upgrade to a specialized variant

Craft the Reactor Heat Exchanger from the basic part plus 8 Copper, the Component Heat Exchanger with 4 Gold in a plus shape, or the Advanced Heat Exchanger from 2 basic parts, 4 Lapis, 2 Circuits, and 1 Copper — each variant moves heat differently.

Placement warning

The Heat Exchanger melts down easily without sufficient cooling and should not be placed next to components with high heat output.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Heat Exchanger do in Industrial Craft 2?

The Heat Exchanger moves heat inside the Nuclear Reactor, taking 4 hU/s from the reactor hull and 12 hU/s from adjacent components.

How much heat can the Heat Exchanger hold?

The heat capacity is 2500 hU — a low value, so the Heat Exchanger melts down easily without sufficient cooling.

What is the recipe for the Heat Exchanger?

Combine 5 Copper, 1 Circuit, and 3 Tin in a shaped 3x3 grid: Copper in the corners and center, Tin on the left, right, and bottom edges, and the Circuit on the top edge.

What can the Heat Exchanger be crafted into?

Three variants that move heat differently: the Reactor Heat Exchanger, the Component Heat Exchanger, and the Advanced Heat Exchanger.

Is the Heat Exchanger a placeable block?

No. The Heat Exchanger is a reactor component that works only inside the Nuclear Reactor grid and cannot be placed in the world.

Which other recipes use the Heat Exchanger?

The Rsh Condensator combines 1 Heat Exchanger, 1 Heat Vent, and 7 Redstone, and the Advanced Charging Re Battery takes 4 Heat Exchangers at its corners.
