How to Make Blast Furnace in Minecraft
Blast Furnace
The Blast Furnace is an IndustrialCraft 2 heat-based machine that turns iron and compressed air into Steel, with Slag as a by-product.
Description
Heat enters the Blast Furnace through the orange square on its side, up to a maximum of 20 hU/t (heat units per tick, a tick being 1/20 of a second). Once running, the Blast Furnace uses 1 hU/t, and extra heat gives no speed boost. Each Steel Ingot takes roughly 300 seconds and arrives with 1 Slag.

Guide
How to make Steel with the Blast Furnace in Minecraft
-
1
Craft the Blast Furnace
The Blast Furnace recipe needs 7 Iron Item Casings, 1 Basic Machine Casing and 1 Heat Conductor in a 3×3 crafting grid.
-
2
Connect a heat source
The orange square on the side of the Blast Furnace is the heat input, and a Solid Heat Generator or an Electric Heat Generator can feed that input.
-
3
Load iron and compressed air
The Blast Furnace takes an iron source such as Iron Ingots, Iron Ore or Iron Dust together with 6 Compressed Air Cells.
-
4
Wait for the Steel
The Blast Furnace needs roughly 300 seconds per Steel Ingot and returns 1 Slag with it.
-
5
Recycle cells and Slag
A Compressor refills the empty cells that the Blast Furnace gives back, and a Thermal Centrifuge processes the Slag.
An Electric Sorting Machine can send iron and cells into the Blast Furnace, empty cells into the Compressor and Slag into the Thermal Centrifuge, so Steel production keeps running on the 6 starting cells.

Frequently asked questions
What else does the Blast Furnace produce besides Steel?
The Blast Furnace outputs Slag with every Steel Ingot, and a Thermal Centrifuge turns Slag into Coal Dust and a Tiny Pile of Gold Dust.
Which heat source suits the early game for the Blast Furnace?
A Solid Heat Generator is enough early on, because the Blast Furnace takes at most 20 hU/t. An Electric Heat Generator fits better once a Compressor already needs electricity for the cells.
Is the IndustrialCraft 2 Blast Furnace a vanilla block?
No. The Blast Furnace comes from the IndustrialCraft 2 mod and only produces Steel, while the vanilla Blast Furnace is a separate block.
