Description

Cactus generates naturally on sand and red sand in desert and badlands biomes, growing in single-block columns up to three blocks tall. Cactus requires sand directly beneath it and no solid block in any of its four horizontal neighbours — placing a stone or dirt block alongside instantly snaps the cactus segment off and drops it as an item. Cactus has a low hardness and a blast resistance of just 0.4, so any tool or a bare hand breaks it in a moment.

The touch-damage property is the cactus's most distinctive trait: any entity (player, mob, dropped item) that contacts a cactus takes half a heart of damage roughly twice per second, and dropped items touching a cactus are destroyed entirely. Players exploit this for passive mob-killing chambers and item trash cans. Smelting one cactus in a furnace yields one green dye, the only renewable green-dye source in vanilla Minecraft. Because cactus cannot be placed directly against another cactus block, dense farms use staggered alternating columns to satisfy the placement rules.

How to build an automatic Cactus farm in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Lay out the sand base

Place a row of sand or red sand blocks with at least one empty space between each column, because two cactus blocks cannot sit directly side by side.

  2. 2

    Plant the cactus

Right-click a cactus item onto each sand block. The cactus grows up to three blocks tall on its own over time.

  3. 3

    Add a breaking block

Place a solid block diagonally adjacent at the second level so each new cactus segment touches it and snaps off automatically when it grows.

  4. 4

    Collect the drops

Run a water stream or a line of hoppers beneath the farm to funnel the broken cactus segments into a chest.

Important

Bone meal does not speed up cactus growth in Minecraft. Cactus grows only on its own internal timer, so farms rely on time, not fertilizer.

  • Green Dye

Frequently asked questions

Can you craft Cactus in Minecraft?

No. Cactus has no crafting recipe. You obtain cactus by breaking a naturally grown one in desert or badlands biomes and replanting the dropped segment on sand.

Does bone meal grow Cactus faster?

No. Bone meal has no effect on cactus. Cactus grows up to three blocks tall on its own internal timer, so farms depend on time rather than fertilizer.

How do you make green dye from Cactus?

Smelt one cactus in a furnace to get one green dye. Cactus is the only renewable source of green dye in vanilla Minecraft.

Why does my Cactus keep breaking?

Cactus breaks if any solid block sits in one of its four horizontal neighbours, or if the sand beneath it is removed. Keep the adjacent spaces empty.

Does Cactus work the same in Java and Bedrock?

Yes, broadly. In both editions cactus damages entities on contact, destroys dropped items, grows on sand, and smelts into green dye.
