Redstone Torch
Redstone Torch emits a strong signal up to fifteen blocks — the most fundamental power source and inverter in redstone circuitry.
Description
The block has one critical secondary behaviour: inversion. When the block it sits on receives a signal, the torch turns off, removing its own output. This makes it the standard NOT gate of redstone engineering — the foundation of every clock, latch, and toggle in the game. Players often place a single torch at the start of a circuit to control whether downstream components run by default. Note that running a redstone torch hot for too long causes it to burn out temporarily; well-designed clocks always include a one-tick rest cycle to prevent this.

How to use a Redstone Torch in Minecraft
-
1
Craft the torch
Place one redstone dust directly above one stick in the crafting grid to produce a single redstone torch.
-
2
Place it as a power source
Set the torch on the floor or a wall; it powers the block it is attached to and weakly powers adjacent blocks at signal strength 15.
-
3
Use it as an inverter
Mount the torch on the side of a block, then feed that block a redstone signal — the torch switches off, giving you a NOT gate.
-
4
Build a clock or latch
Chain inverted torches together to make redstone clocks, T flip-flops, and latches that drive doors, lamps, and farms.
A redstone torch toggled on and off faster than every two ticks burns out and goes dark until the signal stops; add a rest tick to fast clocks to prevent this.

Frequently asked questions
How do you make a Redstone Torch?
Stack one redstone dust on top of one stick in the crafting grid; this yields a single redstone torch.
How strong is a Redstone Torch signal?
It outputs the maximum redstone signal of strength 15, powering any redstone dust placed directly next to it.
Does a Redstone Torch give off light?
Yes, a redstone torch emits light level 7 — dim, but enough to brighten a small area.
Why does my Redstone Torch turn off?
The block it is attached to is receiving a redstone signal. A powered block switches its torch off, which is the NOT-gate inversion behaviour.
Do Redstone Torches work in Bedrock Edition?
Yes, redstone torches behave the same in Java and Bedrock, including the inversion and light level 7.
