Description

The Potion is a consumable item in Minecraft, introduced in Beta 1.8 (the Adventure Update, 2011), that grants the player a temporary status effect lasting from 1 to 8 minutes depending on type and modifications. Potions are created at a Brewing Stand using a Water Bottle as the base, Nether Wart as the primary brewing ingredient, and Blaze Powder as fuel — one piece of Blaze Powder provides 20 brewing operations. Different secondary ingredients produce different effects: Sugar brews Swiftness, Rabbit's Foot brews Leaping, Ghast Tear brews Regeneration, Glistering Melon Slice brews Healing, and Spider Eye brews Poison.

Potion duration can be extended by 50-100% by adding Redstone Dust (typically extending an 8-minute potion to its maximum duration), while Glowstone Dust upgrades the potion's potency to level II at the cost of reduced duration. Adding Gunpowder converts a Potion into a throwable Splash Potion that affects an area, and Dragon's Breath converts a Splash Potion into a Lingering Potion that creates a cloud of effect lasting 30 seconds. Potions cannot be stacked in inventory — each Potion occupies a single slot — and drinking a Potion takes 1.6 seconds. Potions are available in both Java and Bedrock Edition, though Luck Potion exists only in Java Edition and can be obtained exclusively via the `/give` command.

Guide

How to brew and use Potions in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Set up your Brewing Stand

Place a Brewing Stand and supply it with Blaze Powder in the left fuel slot — one Blaze Powder fuels 20 brewing operations. Without Blaze Powder, the Brewing Stand will not start. Collect Blaze Powder by crafting it from Blaze Rods dropped by Blazes in Nether Fortresses.

  2. 2

Brew an Awkward Potion as the base

Place 1-3 Water Bottles in the bottom slots of the Brewing Stand and add Nether Wart to the top ingredient slot. After 20 seconds, the Water Bottles become Awkward Potions — the required base for all effect-granting Potions. Nether Wart grows on Soul Sand and is found in Nether Fortresses.

  3. 3

Add a secondary ingredient for your desired effect

With Awkward Potions in the bottom slots, add the effect ingredient to the top slot. Examples: Sugar for Swiftness (Speed I, 3 min), Rabbit's Foot for Leaping (Jump Boost I, 3 min), Magma Cream for Fire Resistance (8 min), Puffer Fish for Water Breathing (3 min), Golden Carrot for Night Vision (3 min).

  4. 4

Modify Potions with Redstone, Glowstone, or Gunpowder

Add Redstone Dust to extend Potion duration (for example, Swiftness extends from 3:00 to 8:00). Add Glowstone Dust to upgrade to level II effect at the cost of shorter duration. Add Gunpowder to create a Splash Potion that can be thrown to affect multiple players or mobs in an area.

  5. 5

Drink or throw the Potion to activate effects

Right-click and hold a Potion to drink it over 1.6 seconds; the effect applies immediately upon finishing. For Splash Potions, right-click to throw. The Potion bottle remains in inventory as an empty Glass Bottle after use — refill it at a water source to start the next batch.

Note

Instant effect Potions (Healing and Harming) cannot be extended with Redstone Dust — adding Redstone to these Potions has no effect. Luck Potion exists only in Java Edition and cannot be brewed; it is obtainable only via the `/give` command.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to start brewing Potions in Minecraft?

To brew Potions in Minecraft, you need a Brewing Stand, Blaze Powder for fuel, Glass Bottles filled with water, and Nether Wart to create the Awkward Potion base. Nether Wart and Blaze Rods are obtained from Nether Fortresses.

How do I extend a Potion's duration?

Add Redstone Dust to a Potion in the Brewing Stand to extend its duration. For example, a Swiftness Potion increases from 3:00 to 8:00 minutes. Note that instant-effect Potions like Healing and Harming cannot be extended with Redstone.

What is the difference between a Splash Potion and a Lingering Potion?

A Splash Potion is created by adding Gunpowder to a brewed Potion — it can be thrown and affects all players and mobs in the impact area. A Lingering Potion is created by adding Dragon's Breath to a Splash Potion — when thrown, it creates a cloud that applies the effect to anyone who walks through it for 30 seconds.

Can Potions be stacked in inventory?

No. Potions cannot be stacked in Minecraft — each Potion occupies one inventory slot regardless of type. Plan your inventory space accordingly when carrying multiple Potions into combat or exploration.

What does Glowstone Dust do to a Potion?

Adding Glowstone Dust to a Potion upgrades the effect to level II, making it more powerful. However, this reduces the duration of the Potion. For example, Strength II deals more damage per hit but lasts fewer minutes than Strength I extended with Redstone.

Is the Luck Potion available in Bedrock Edition?

No. The Luck Potion exists only in Java Edition and cannot be brewed through normal gameplay in either edition. In Java Edition, it is obtainable exclusively via the `/give @p minecraft:potion{Potion:"minecraft:luck"}` command.
