Description
Lightning Rod is crafted from three copper ingots stacked vertically, producing a single tall thin rod that can be placed on any side of any block. During a thunderstorm, any lightning bolt that would strike within sixty-four blocks horizontally on Java Edition (one hundred twenty-eight on Bedrock) is instead redirected to the rod, sparing surrounding wooden structures, livestock, villagers, and oxidized copper from being reset. This is the only reliable defence against lightning damage in vanilla Minecraft.
When struck, the device emits a full redstone signal of fifteen for one second — useful for triggering complex weather-driven contraptions like automatic shelter doors or alarm circuits. The rod itself oxidises through the same four stages as other copper, though weathering does not affect its function: even fully patinated rods still attract lightning and output redstone normally. Honeycomb wax can lock any oxidation stage in place. Indoors or in the Nether or End, the rod has no function — lightning only spawns during thunderstorms in the Overworld at a sufficient sky-light level.
