Description

The Iron Chest from the Ala Industrial mod is a 36-slot storage chest for Minecraft Java Edition 26.2 — exactly 9 slots (one row) more than the vanilla copper chest's 27. The upgrade starts from the vanilla copper chest: the copper chest sits in the center of a 3×3 workbench grid, 8 iron ingots fill the 8 surrounding cells, and any oxidation stage works, including a waxed copper chest. Everything stored inside the copper chest carries over into the Iron Chest automatically, so the jump from 27 to 36 slots never dumps a single item on the ground. The Iron Chest is pure storage: no energy, no progress bars, and no machine interface — just 4 rows of 9 slots behind a vanilla-style 3D model with an animated lid and a dedicated metallic open/close sound.

Two Iron Chests placed side by side and facing the same way merge into a 72-slot double chest: the window shows 6 rows, a scrollbar reaches the hidden rows, and shift-click still lands in them. Hoppers, droppers, and item pipes treat the double chest as one container — a filled half simply continues into the other — and a comparator reads the combined fullness from either half. A broken Iron Chest drops itself and spills its contents, waterlogging works like on a vanilla chest, and any pickaxe is enough at hardness 3.0 and blast resistance 6.0. Along the upgrade line — copper 27, iron 36, silver 45, gold 54, electrum 81 — the Iron Chest is the first step for a base that has outgrown the vanilla copper chest. A Stock Display Frame mounted on the front shows the stored count at a glance.

Guide

How to craft and use the Iron Chest in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Start from a copper chest

Any vanilla copper chest of Minecraft 26.2 works as the base — 27 slots, 3 rows × 9, and any oxidation stage, including a waxed copper chest.

  2. 2

    Gather 8 iron ingots

The Iron Chest recipe consumes exactly 8 iron ingots, one for each outer cell of the 3×3 workbench grid around the copper chest.

  3. 3

    Craft the upgrade

Place the copper chest in the center cell, put one iron ingot in each of the 8 surrounding cells, and take the Iron Chest from the result slot — the copper chest's contents arrive intact, with 9 extra slots.

  4. 4

    Place and fill 36 slots

Set the Iron Chest down and open 4 rows × 9 = 36 slots; the animated lid lifts with a dedicated metallic sound, and no energy is ever consumed.

  5. 5

    Build a 72-slot double chest

Place a second Iron Chest directly beside the first, both facing the same way, to merge into a 72-slot double chest with 6 visible rows and a scrollbar for the rest; normal placement joins a matching neighbour automatically, and a sneak-click attaches deliberately.

Pickaxe, drop and comparator

Any pickaxe breaks the Iron Chest (hardness 3.0, blast resistance 6.0) — a broken half drops itself and spills only its own items, and a comparator reads the double chest's combined fullness from either half.

Frequently asked questions

How many slots does the Iron Chest have?

The Iron Chest has 36 slots arranged as 4 rows × 9 — exactly 9 more than the vanilla copper chest's 27. Higher tiers in the same chest line offer 45, 54, and 81 slots.

How do I craft an Iron Chest in Minecraft?

Surround one copper chest with 8 iron ingots on a 3×3 workbench grid. The copper chest may be waxed or at any oxidation stage, and everything stored inside carries over into the resulting Iron Chest.

Can two Iron Chests form a double chest?

Yes — two Iron Chests placed side by side and facing the same direction merge into a 72-slot double chest. The window shows 6 rows with a scrollbar for the hidden rows, and hoppers or droppers treat both halves as a single container.

What tool do I need to break an Iron Chest?

Any pickaxe breaks the Iron Chest, which has hardness 3.0 and blast resistance 6.0. Breaking one half of a double chest drops that half and spills only its own contents while the other half reverts to a single chest.

Is the Iron Chest available on Bedrock?

No. Ala Industrial is a Java Edition mod for Minecraft 26.2, so the Iron Chest exists only on Java Edition, where the mod runs identically on Fabric and NeoForge.

Does the Iron Chest need energy to work?

No, the Iron Chest uses no energy at all: pure storage with no progress bars, unlike the machines found elsewhere in the mod.
