Description

Compressed Hydrated Coal Ball is a processing item from the IndustrialCraft 2 mod, sitting in the middle of the synthetic diamond production chain. You make it by placing a Coal Ball into a powered IC2 Compressor, which spends EU energy to squeeze the ball into its dense compressed form. The Coal Ball itself is crafted from 8 Coal Dust surrounding 1 Flint in the crafting grid, and the coal dust is hydrated with water in the versions that use the "hydrated" naming. The compressed ball has no standalone use; it is purely an ingredient. To advance toward diamonds, surround 1 Obsidian with 8 compressed balls in the crafting grid to form a Coal Chunk, then compress that chunk again in the Compressor to obtain one Industrial Diamond. Coal Dust comes from running coal through an IC2 Macerator, so the full chain of Macerator, crafting table and Compressor turns cheap, renewable coal into valuable industrial diamonds without mining. Those diamonds power advanced IndustrialCraft 2 tools, drills and machine casings.

IndustrialCraft 2 Guide

How to make a Compressed Hydrated Coal Ball in Minecraft (IndustrialCraft 2)

  1. 1

    Macerate coal into Coal Dust

Run coal through an IC2 Macerator to produce Coal Dust, the base resource for the whole diamond chain.

  2. 2

    Craft a Coal Ball

Place 8 Coal Dust around 1 Flint in the crafting grid to form a Coal Ball.

  3. 3

    Compress the Coal Ball

Put the Coal Ball into a powered IC2 Compressor; it spends EU and outputs the Compressed Hydrated Coal Ball.

  4. 4

    Continue toward a diamond

Surround 1 Obsidian with 8 compressed balls to craft a Coal Chunk, then compress that chunk again to obtain an Industrial Diamond.

Note

The "hydrated" naming is version-specific; the compressed ball has no standalone use and exists only as a diamond-chain ingredient.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Compressed Hydrated Coal Ball used for?

It is an intermediate ingredient in IndustrialCraft 2 used to craft Coal Chunks, which then compress into Industrial Diamonds.

How do you make a Compressed Hydrated Coal Ball?

Place a Coal Ball into a powered IC2 Compressor; the machine spends EU to compress it into the dense ball.

How many are needed for a diamond?

You need 8 compressed balls and 1 obsidian to craft a Coal Chunk, and one Coal Chunk compresses into a single Industrial Diamond.

Is the compressed coal ball renewable?

Yes. Coal and coal dust are renewable, so the full IndustrialCraft 2 chain produces diamonds without mining them.

Does it work in vanilla Minecraft?

No. It is added by the IndustrialCraft 2 mod and needs IC2 machines such as the Macerator and Compressor.
