Description

Coal Chunk is an IndustrialCraft 2 Experimental item for Minecraft 1.12.2 and the final step before crafting an Industrial Diamond. It sits at the top of the coal compression chain: eight Coal Dust plus a piece of Flint are crafted into a Coal Ball, eight Coal Balls are compressed into Compressed Coal Balls, and eight Compressed Coal Balls arranged around a single Obsidian block in a crafting grid yield one Coal Chunk. Placing that Coal Chunk into a powered Compressor produces one Industrial Diamond, IC2's renewable replacement for vanilla diamond used in many advanced recipes. Each Coal Chunk therefore represents 64 coal dust, one flint and one obsidian invested upfront, so the chain is mostly worthwhile when coal is plentiful but diamonds are not. In a 1.12.2 industrial base you typically automate the chain with a Macerator, a Compressor and a steady supply of coal from Quarry-style mining or coal generation, so Industrial Diamonds become a routine output rather than a bottleneck. Treat Coal Chunks as a high-value intermediate and store them safely until you are ready to compress them, since each one is several minutes of machine time.

IC2 Guide

How to use Coal Chunk in IndustrialCraft 2

  1. 1

    Macerate coal into coal dust

Run coal through a Macerator until you have at least 64 coal dust per planned Coal Chunk, since each chunk consumes 64 dust.

  2. 2

    Craft Coal Balls

Surround a piece of Flint with 8 coal dust in the crafting grid to make one Coal Ball. Repeat eight times for one chunk.

  3. 3

    Compress into Compressed Coal Balls

Place each Coal Ball into a powered Compressor; each one becomes a Compressed Coal Ball that you'll need in the next step.

  4. 4

    Craft the Coal Chunk

Arrange 8 Compressed Coal Balls around one block of Obsidian in the crafting grid to produce a single Coal Chunk.

  5. 5

    Compress into Industrial Diamond

Insert the Coal Chunk into the Compressor again; it converts into one Industrial Diamond ready for advanced IC2 recipes.

IC2 Experimental

On Minecraft 1.12.2, the Coal Chunk recipe is one of the most stable chains in IC2 Experimental. Automate the Macerator and Compressor pair to get a steady stream of Industrial Diamonds.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Coal Chunk?

Coal Chunk is an IC2 Experimental item crafted from 8 Compressed Coal Balls and 1 Obsidian; it is the direct precursor to an Industrial Diamond.

How do I get an Industrial Diamond from a Coal Chunk?

Place the Coal Chunk into a powered Compressor. After the cycle finishes, it outputs one Industrial Diamond.

How much coal does one Coal Chunk cost?

Each chunk uses 8 Compressed Coal Balls (64 coal dust), 1 Flint and 1 Obsidian, so it represents the value of 64 coal plus the obsidian.

Is the Coal Chunk recipe stable on 1.12.2?

Yes, in IC2 Experimental for Minecraft 1.12.2 this chain is one of the standard ways to produce renewable Industrial Diamonds.
