Description

Granite is a pink-orange stone block that generates underground in the Overworld and can also be crafted from one diorite and one nether quartz. A pickaxe is required to collect Granite; any pickaxe tier works, and Silk Touch is unnecessary because Granite drops itself. Granite has the same hardness and blast resistance as ordinary stone, does not burn, and has been part of Minecraft since Java Edition 1.8.

Granite provides a warm, speckled building texture for foundations, paths, kitchens, cliffs, and Mediterranean-style structures. Four Granite blocks arranged in a 2×2 crafting grid produce four Polished Granite blocks, while a stonecutter converts Granite into Polished Granite directly. Granite also substitutes for stone in several recipes, including stone slabs, stone stairs, and stonecutters, which makes mined pockets useful beyond decoration.

Building guide

How to obtain and use Granite in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Find or craft Granite

Mine natural Granite underground in the Overworld, or combine one Diorite with one Nether Quartz to craft one Granite block.

  2. 2

    Use a pickaxe

Break Granite with any pickaxe tier so the block drops itself; tools without the pickaxe tag destroy Granite without a drop.

  3. 3

    Polish a four-block batch

Place four Granite blocks in a 2×2 crafting grid to receive four Polished Granite blocks, or process individual blocks with a stonecutter.

  4. 4

    Build with warm contrast

Pair Granite with quartz, calcite, terracotta, stripped oak, or andesite to separate warm surfaces from pale or grey structural details.

Mining note

Silk Touch does not change the Granite drop, because Granite already drops itself when mined with a pickaxe.

Frequently asked questions

How do you craft Granite in Minecraft?

One Diorite and one Nether Quartz craft into one Granite block. Natural underground pockets are usually faster when a large building needs many blocks.

What tool is required to mine Granite?

Granite requires a pickaxe, but any pickaxe tier can collect it. Silk Touch is not required.

How do you make Polished Granite?

Four Granite blocks in a 2×2 crafting grid produce four Polished Granite blocks. A stonecutter can also process Granite one block at a time.

Does Granite burn or react to redstone?

Granite is nonflammable and has no active redstone behavior. Granite works as a solid structural block.
