Description
Dropper is crafted from seven cobblestone, one redstone dust, and an empty middle-row slot on the crafting grid. When powered by a redstone signal, it ejects one random item from its nine-slot inventory in the direction the device faces. Critically, it spits the item out as a free-floating entity rather than shooting an arrow or potion the way a dispenser does — making it the right choice when you want the item to be picked up by another component, fall into a hopper, or land on a piston.
A dropper aimed straight up tosses items into the air for a few blocks; aimed sideways, it propels them about half a block — far enough to clear the device and land in a stream below. Chains of droppers connected to each other automatically pass items along, building primitive item elevators long before hopper minecarts existed. Combined with a comparator and a clock, droppers form the foundation of automated kits, slow-feed crafters, and surprise mob-spawn traps.
