Dropper ejects items as physical drops when powered — the redstone workhorse for item-sorters, hopper feeds, and chained item elevators.
Description
A Dropper aimed straight up tosses items into the air for a few blocks; aimed sideways, Dropper propels them about half a block — far enough to clear the device. When Dropper faces a container such as a chest, hopper, or another dropper, it transfers one item directly into that container instead of dropping it into the world. Chains of droppers pass items along automatically, forming primitive item elevators, while a Dropper combined with a comparator and a clock circuit drives automated kits, slow-feed crafters, and mob-spawn traps. Dropper was added in Java Edition 1.5, the Redstone Update.

Craft the dropper
Place 7 cobblestone around the edges of the 3x3 grid, put 1 redstone dust in the bottom-center slot, and leave the very center empty. This yields one dropper (a dispenser is the same recipe plus a bow in the center).

Place and aim it
A dropper faces the direction you were looking when you placed it and can point up, down, or sideways. The round output hole on its front shows where items will be ejected.

Load the inventory
Right-click the dropper to open its 9 slots and add the items you want to move. Each redstone pulse ejects one item from a random occupied slot.

Power it with redstone
Trigger the dropper with a lever, button, pressure plate, or redstone pulse. For continuous output, feed it a clock circuit; each rising signal edge fires once.
A dropper never activates items — it never shoots arrows, places water, or throws splash potions. It always spits the item out as a physical drop, or pushes it straight into a chest, hopper, or dropper placed in front of it.
