Dirt can be mined by hand or with any tool, though using a shovel is fastest. Grass spreads naturally onto adjacent dirt blocks under sufficient light, eventually turning them into grass blocks. How to Use Dirt in Minecraft

    Dirt requires no tool to mine — break it with your bare hand or any tool. Using a shovel is the fastest method. Dirt generates naturally beneath grass blocks in every Overworld biome and drops itself when broken.

    Till Dirt into Farmland

    Equip a hoe and right-click (or use) a Dirt block to convert it into Farmland. Farmland must be within four blocks of a water source to stay hydrated (dark brown); dry Farmland reverts to Dirt if a player or mob jumps on it.

    Plant and grow crops

    Right-click Farmland with seeds, carrots, potatoes, or beetroot seeds to plant crops. Wheat, carrots, potatoes, and beetroots all require Farmland to grow. Ensure light level is at least 9 above the crop.

    Allow grass to spread

    Grass spreads from adjacent Grass Blocks onto Dirt at light level ≥ 9 when no opaque block sits on top of the Dirt. Use this to restore natural ground cover after building or to create lawn areas.

    Convert Dirt into a Dirt Path

    Right-click a Dirt block with a shovel to create a Dirt Path block. Dirt Paths are slightly shorter than a full block and make clean decorative walkways without needing any crafting recipe.

Tip

Dirt is not craftable — always gather it directly from the ground. Keep a stack in your inventory early game: it is needed for quick farms, filling holes, and temporary scaffolding.
