Description

Mycelium is the surface block of the mushroom fields biome — one of the rarest naturally-spawning biomes in vanilla, generally found on isolated islands far from continental land. The texture is a dusty purple with tiny mushroom-spore particles drifting upward when the player stands nearby. The biome itself is uniquely peaceful: hostile mobs cannot spawn on this surface even at night, making mushroom islands the safest natural areas in the Overworld.

The block spreads to adjacent dirt blocks at random ticks under sufficient light, exactly like grass, allowing players to slowly transform a base into the mushroom aesthetic. Unlike grass, this surface allows mushroom growth at any light level — even in full sunlight — which is otherwise impossible. The biome is the only place where mooshrooms (cow variant with mushrooms growing on their backs) spawn, providing renewable mushroom-stew food. Mining without silk touch drops plain dirt; the visual variant requires the appropriate enchantment for capture.

How to get and use Mycelium in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Find a mushroom fields biome

Mycelium only generates naturally in the rare mushroom fields biome, usually on small islands far out at sea. Explore or sail to locate one.

  2. 2

    Mine it with Silk Touch

Use a shovel enchanted with Silk Touch to collect the mycelium block itself. Without Silk Touch the block drops plain dirt instead.

  3. 3

Place it next to dirt to spread

Lay mycelium beside exposed dirt blocks. With enough light it slowly spreads to neighbouring dirt at random ticks, just like grass.

  4. 4

    Grow mushrooms on top

Plant red or brown mushrooms on mycelium; they survive and spread at any light level, even full daylight, which is impossible on most blocks.

Important

Mycelium cannot be crafted. A Silk Touch tool is the only way to keep the block when mining; otherwise it reverts to dirt.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get mycelium in Minecraft?

Mine a mycelium block with a Silk Touch shovel inside a mushroom fields biome. Without Silk Touch it drops dirt and cannot be collected.

Can you craft mycelium?

No. Mycelium has no crafting recipe; it is obtained only by mining it with Silk Touch or by finding the mushroom fields biome naturally.

What is the difference between mycelium and podzol?

Both let mushrooms grow at any light level, but mycelium spreads to nearby dirt like grass and is exclusive to mushroom fields, while podzol does not spread.

Do hostile mobs spawn on mycelium?

Hostile mobs do not spawn on the mushroom fields surface even at night, making mycelium islands among the safest natural places in the Overworld.
